Wahnsinn.

Death in Hamburg by Richard J. Evans: 9780143036364 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books "A tremendous book, the biography of a city which charts the multifarious pathways from bacilli to burgomaster." -Roy Porter, London Review of Books Why were nearly 10,000 people killed in six weeks ...

“Death in Hamburg” by Sir Richard J Evans.
A book written in 1987 for our COVID age. The title is a reference to Thomas Mann's novella "Death in Venice", also set in a cholera epidemic. This is a review of one of the best books I've ever read. 5/5 stars. 🧵 www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/294784...

H.H.S. Scraps Studies of Vaccines and Treatments for Future Pandemics (Gift Article) Federal officials cited the end of the Covid-19 pandemic in halting the research. But much of the work was focused on preventing outbreaks of other pathogens.

"Angry, disappointed, frustrated"--Scientists were making progress on vaccines and antivirals for the next pandemic--until this week, when the Trump administration abruptly told them to stop. Here's my story with @apoorvanyt.bsky.social Gift link: nyti.ms/43Xz77q

French Scientist Reportedly Denied U.S. Entry Due to Trump Criticism So much for free speech in America?

Too many catching Covid-19 in hospital, experts say - but precautions being rolled back Hospital-acquired infections are a billion-dollar burden and cause more disability than road crashes. Why aren't we doing more to prevent them?

“Based on Australian data, it is likely between 10 and 15 percent of Covid deaths are from hospital-acquired infections, representing hundreds of people”

No one should have to risk Covid to get care, yet many patients are being infected because hospitals refuse to mandate masks & clean the air

The issue is that this virus, like e.g. influenza, keeps mutating. Vaccines can only do so much if new variants keep popping up.

Update: They were removed from our reviewer assignments completely. I'm so sorry to all those graduate students.

Anonymous to protect the identity of the NIH employee I spoke to...I am on study section next month to discuss F awards. We were just instructed to put the F31-Diversity applications on the bottom of our priority list for review because there is a chance we may not be able to review them. My heart is breaking for the grad students and their mentors that put so much work into these just for them to be disqualified and thrown out.

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

Wow. So not only were several bird flu studies left out of today’s CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, some data on bird flu briefly appeared in the online report and then was quickly removed.

From USAID colleague, with permission to share. It's not just chaos it is devastation and tearing apart of families and communities. Not to talk of systems that kept us safe. This is just one story, multiple this by 10,000.
Is this really making America great?

Heard a version of this from a source earlier today: Everyone from USAID working abroad forced to uproot their lives, let alone abandon their work, on three days notice. Uprooting thousands of families on no notice, in an intentionally humiliating and harrowing way.

We were just told that they won’t let us in. They are denying entry to 2 dozen members of Congress. Elon Musk has all our private information & we have no idea what he’s doing with it. This is happening completely behind closed doors. HELL NO. It’s illegal. We demand oversight!

31.01.2025 13:46 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0
