Imagine the delay, cost, confusion and disruption they could have avoided by amending existing legislation like a normal government.

IMHO, this whole Ruth Richardson vs Willis debate is a beat-up designed to make Willis look more moderate and to give her an excuse to make even bigger cuts to public servants and social services. They are not to be trusted, and this is manufactured meddling.

Bishop talks about urbanism and, in his capacity as Housing and RMA Reform Minister, he has introduced several policies that build on this.
But he has not undone any of the critically important transport reforms introduced by Brown.

It was Brown who defined the official approach to transport with his Government Policy Statement (GPS) on Land Transport, released in June 2024.

The GPS put the Roads of National Significance (Rons) at the heart of transport planning. It foreshadowed a range of other policies Brown would go on to introduce, including an end to the Road to Zero safety programme and the targeted lower speed limits introduced by the previous government โ€“ especially around schools.

The GPS also signalled higher public-transport fares and prevented new or expanded roading projects from including cycleways. It announced there would be no more incentives for cleaner cars.

And with its focus on roads at the expense of alternatives, it encourages suburban sprawl and reinforced car dependency.

None of this should have survived the advent of an urbanist as TransportMinister. But itโ€™s all still in place. Why? My reading is that Bishop canโ€™t change this even if he wants to because he doesnโ€™t have the numbers, either in his caucus or in the Cabinet.

Bishop might be the minister, but he is doing Brownโ€™s work.
Itโ€™s almost like Bishop is Brownโ€™s sock puppet.

Cartoon. Title: Groundbreaking

Four panels. Luxon is in the first holding a report that says 'IMPORTANT INFO INSIDE'. He says, "Erica... we have official advice on the Treaty in the curriculum..." the next panel has him holding the report up in his hand about to throw it to Erica, "AND... you know what that means!"

Third panel: Erica Stanford catches the report and shouts, "I SURE DO CHRIS!"

Fourth panel: Erica is standing by a green wheel bin holding the lid open with a whole load of expert reports inside it - "We file it away with all the other expert reports!"

Are NZ summers too long? The PM says weโ€™ve got to keep moving The summer shutdown is coming but should the Kiwi summer holiday still stay sacrosanct?

Look what I'm saying to you is, Amanda and the kids refuse to do more than their contractual 48 hours of happy family photos so I'm going to have to do my tiktoks elsewhere. So you serfs can't have more days than me.

The school board pushbacks confirm my theory that the so-called liberal MPsโ€™ job experience - often limited to working for the Party, and placed in Party-friendly companies - has left them uniquely ignorant of how much the rest of our society has moved on. Itโ€™s not 2005 anymore, and Brash still lost

Govt warned new methane target aligned with 'catastrophic' warming Newly released documents reveal the Govt's new methane target is associated with 2.7C of warming โ€“ a level labelled 'catastrophic' by the UN.

Scoop: A trove of briefings and Cabinet documents released under the OIA reveals the Govt was advised its new methane target is only consistent with warming of 2-2.7C (and possibly up to 4.5C).

Climate scientists have said 2.7C would represent 'unprecedented peril'.

Glyphosate ruling creates a herbicide limbo Analysis: Food Safety has decided to leave residue limits for Roundup unchanged, raising questions about future enforcement efforts.

Link to the glyphosate issue.

Quote from Arbuckle "we are confident the proposed limits would not have presented any health risks to consumers" - this a was for a 100 times increase in the current level.

He seems to have a van Velden regard for the publics health.

He has done remarkably well to reach his position as he's from the group under represented in management positions, an old white guy.

I suspect we're going to be hearing a bit about this Vince Arbuckle character over the next few days.

His conclusion that the school was the likely suspect in serving the mouldy food rather than horse-meat burger company Compass seems remarkably convenient for minister Seymour.

Simon says cap your rates โ€“ how will councils respond? The Govt says councils must live within their means โ€“ but overseas evidence on rate caps is mixed, while local authorities fear a loss of 'critical investment' in infrastructure
