I wonder if people saying the former think right-wing media is only christian values movies, fox news, the manosphere, and ai generated images of crying babies holding american flags, and not also rhetoric laundered through outlets positioning themselves as the alternatives.

Not sure how to square "conservative media is an intellectual and cultural dead end that is doomed to angrily yell up its own asshole appealing to fewer and fewer people, it already appeals to practically nobody" with "conservative media has effectively steered public policy for decades"

Can't believe I have to explain to a columnist at the fucking New York Times (actually I can) but the news industry is collaborative to an unbelievable degree. One small story can set off a wave of coverage that branches out and sparks new ideas. Major news corps control a good deal of that flow.
