the orville bumped me when they put out an episode all about "court of public opinion run amok" in the wake of MeToo. the episode also had a scene about how people concerned about cultural appropriation are sooooooo annoying. it's your conservative uncle's star trek

they are trying to lean into the viral moment and spin the bad publicity because all that matters is engagement. and product.

Seeing @cowtoolsdaily.bsky.social posting about jokes, punchlines, and the explanation etc thereof, suggests that this is an excellent opportunity for me to share this video of me telling two jokes over the course of about ten minutes, and explaining why they are funny in *excruciating* detail...

i'm convinced this read is something somebody came up with much later (like, post-internet) and had no bearing on the joke's original construction or popularity

it's very closely related to

"when geese fly in a V, why is one side is always longer than the other?"

I think that read of the joke is recent and came well after the joke itself was already ubiquitous.

the original intent i think was more like a Leslie Nielsen joke. "to get to the other side" is an accurate answer to the question, but is so obvious and literal it hardly bears stating at all.

it's like a Jokes 102 joke that is for some reason routinely used to answer the question "what is a joke"?

but it only works if you are already familiar enough with joke structure to expect a non-literal punchline.

if you try to forget that

"why did the chicken cross the road? to get to the other side."

is THE go-to example of an overused unfunny joke, it's actually a pretty good anti-joke. i think the biggest thing going against it for my generation is we first heard it at age 5 instead of like, 13.
