Sometimes I have a bit of a slump trying to find new books I like so have a good re-read session instead. I think that was my third read?

The right-wing press is going mad over votes at 16 ("a naked attempt to twist democracy in Labourโs favour", an "election-rigging move"...)
Oddly, they said the same 100 years ago when the voting age for women fell from 30 to 21.
Let's revisit the Mail's campaign to"Stop the Flapper Vote Folly"...

A window looks out on to a stone wall. A handsome jackdaw is perched on a bird feeder attached to the wall, with a large chunk of bread in it's beak. It looks very pleased with itself.

16.05.2025 16:25 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Fantastic ending to Baroness Kidron's speech in the House of Lords yesterday, which led to the government's defeat on AI & copyright.
Speaking the UK's creators: "Their property, their labour, is worthy of your protection - because apart from anything else, it is not ours to give away."
9 May 2025 Dear (redacted) Thank you for contacting me about the rights of transgender and non-binary people. I agree with you that everyone in the UK should be free to live their lives and fulfil their potential regardless of their sex or gender identity. It is also important that politicians and public figures ensure discourse in this area is respectful and that all people are treated with kindness and dignity. It is important experiences in society are safe, fair and equal. I fully recognise that the Supreme Court's recent judgement has caused distress to many transgender and non-binary people, including in Keighley and Ilkley. However, the Supreme Court did clearly state that transgender people remain protected by the indirect discrimination provisions of the Equality Act 2010 (irrespective of whether they have a Gender Recognition Certificate). The judgement also reaffirmed that trans people are also protected from indirect discrimination where they are put at a particular disadvantage that they share with members of their biological sex. I know that the Supreme Court's judgement has raised several issues about the participation of transgender and non-binary people in women's spaces and services. While I recognise and understand the strength of your view, there are legitimate concerns about access to female single-sex spaces and participation in women's sports. Following the ruling, the Equality and Human Rights Commission's interim guidance provides some of the clarity that service providers as well as transgender and non-binary people need. Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. Yours sincerely Robbie Moore MP Member of Parliament for Keighley and IIkley
Response from my MP following a letter asking if he will share any words of understanding or solidarity with trans locals.
Disappointing reply. Not unexpected. He shares the tired old slogan "legitimate concerns". Doesn't say what they actually are.
