On October 7, 1975, a Federal judge reversed a deportation order for John Lennon. The next year he was issued this green card.
Nixon and Strom Thurmond (natch!) cooked up the deportation in 1972 as Lennon became more involved in anti-war activities. They were afraid that he would sway the "youth vote." The INS did their bit and started proceedings. Lennon fought back in court.

Image of the original book cover for Howl by Allen Ginsberg. Headline is, "THE BEAT GOES ON." Text below is "On this day in 1955, Allen Ginsbert first performed "Howl" at City Lights Bookstore. One year later, City Lights Books published it. In 1957, the City Lights Bookstore manager along with poet and publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti were arrested and charged with selling obscene materials. They won in court."
Howl won in court, and eventually won the respect of the literary establishment. But the happy ending was just prologue to the story (of book banning and challenges) that goes on and on. And who knows? The Supremes could revive obscenity trials! Why not?

Black and white publicity phot of Carole Lombard. Adjacent text is "Fabulous & Funny. Carole Lombard."
#botd in 1908, Lombard's angelic looks (which belied her ability to curse like the proverbial sailor) combined with crack timing made her perfect screwball heroine before her death at 33 in a plane crash. Before Gable, she was marred to William Powell, and they remained friends.

Still from the film Days of Heaven, in which a solitary figure stands in a vast field at twilight. The headline beneath is "HEAVENLY LIGHT" and text below that is "Days of Heaven, which premiered on this day in 1978, is a msterpiece of mood and natural light. Director Terrence Malick shot much of it during "mage" hour to achieve the heavenly effect."
"Magic hour" is really about a half hour; extended filming meant Haskell Wexler had to shoot roughly half the film when Nestor Almendros (who got the Oscar) had another commitment. The filming of a locust plague is a story in itself. In a theater the film is an experience.

Black and white still from the movie trailer, with the title "Maltese Falcon" in the foreground filling the screen in front of a shadowy statue of the falcon in the background. Text below is "Premiered on this day in 1941. Movies were never the same again."
It took 3 tries to get it right. The '31 version was too racy for Hayes; the second, starring Bette Davis, was dull. George Raft was offered the Spade part but turned it down because he didn't want to be in a remake or work with an inexperienced director. (It was Huston's debut).
