Ramadan Kareem from my family to yours. We are approaching the conclusion of the 2nd week of Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims across our city and world. I am reflective of the ways all our neighbors have stepped up to care for one another- give shelter, food, transportation, and safety.

This kind of visible, militarized enforcement is deeply traumatizing especially for our youth. The decision to violently force entry into a home, causing unnecessary damage, once again highlights the excessive level of force used throughout Operation Surge.

Equally alarming is how this operation was conducted. Masked agents carried out this raid during school pick-up time, near a bus stop where children were waiting. Some children were biking. Our community’s children should not have to witness armed agents breaking down doors in their neighborhoods.

The continued targeting of individuals for engaging in constitutionally protected activity reflects a troubling pattern of federal overreach and the use of aggressive, forceful tactics to silence dissent.

We have also confirmed that MPD was NOT present & was not involved in this action.

Let me be clear: it is deeply disturbing to witness the ongoing arrests of journalists and community members for exercising their First Amendment rights. Journalism is not a crime. Peaceful assembly is not a crime.

We have since learned that this action was part of a series of coordinated arrests conducted this morning targeting several community members allegedly connected to the anti-ICE church protest. Among those detained was an independent journalist who was present to document the protest.

Today, I received confirmed reports that agents from ICE and HSI forced entry into a residence on the 5200 block of 36th Ave., kicking in the door and detaining a constituent. Witnesses report that 8–9 masked agents carried out the operation. 🧵
