Living through 2008 was one thing as a 25 year old EMT who didn’t know anything or have any assets.

Reading the big short afterwards and seeing how bad it was? Not a great time.

My alma mater, Warren Wilson College, has an endowment of ~$60 million and 800 students. With $1b, they could be like Berea College and go completely tuition free for all students. It’d be revolutionary.

I think there’s some value here to deploy this. Especially if you can train the model on a large universe of narratives and proper classification (which is a difficult proposition in and of itself). The revisions and staff time are a burden, but we need to get this right.

Seems like an actual use case for AI would be to scan the narrative and attempt to classify the offenses, or to flag what it thinks are discrepancies between the misdo / felony & category.

At least, it’d be a good experiment to run.

Yes. It’s 35 days in even years and 6 months in the odd years. But, you can’t lose your job for being a legislator…you just don’t get paid from your real job, you get the pittance we provide. Which is why all the parents of young kids serve 1 term and quit.

I actually read the books I borrow from the library though. When I buy them, they linger on my “to be read” bookcase while I feel increasingly guilty about the growing quantity of books I own, but have not yet read.

IV. CONCLUSION An anonymous government is no government at all. It cannot be held accountable. A masked agent freely uses force without justifying his actions, and the public cannot name him to challenge his conduct. A regime of secret policing has no place in our society. Here, the Government’s power is derived by the People, and the People must be able to identify the Government when it acts to infringe on their liberty. Literally my entire job is based on upon knowing how complex systems work and being able to explain said systems and policy proposals to elected officials. Also building human relationships and trust with others to get good public policy done. I don’t see how advanced autocorrect will replace me.

I appreciate that his official NASA bio calls out that he was an Eagle Scout. He’s an astronaut for crying out loud, and that’s still important to him.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

It one hundred percent does. Especially because my job is about knowing stuff and then communicating said stuff to humans…if we truncate the “knowing stuff” part for kids and junior staff, then our future selves will not be pleased with the results.

Our school did a parent panel on AI, and everyone was from the industry. I was very skeptical and then they were very doomer about AI - which confirmed my priors, so that’s great - but I was like, why are you doing this job then?

I’m truly not even sure this is legal for government. There’s a ton of equal protection claims to raise here for two people with the same performance but different ratings because the boss ran out of 5s to give.
