Had a great session zero for my upcoming Daggerheart campaign! Made a prototype homebrew campaign frame and it was so fun to incorporate!

Homebrew! We're gonna start with a one-shot using the book's improv one-shot page, then go into a campaign frame I'm working on.

Prepping for a Daggerheart session zero and I'm already more excited than I've been for a DND campaign in quite some time. Hope it plays as well as it reads cause I've been having a blast reading through it, the GM section in particular.

If all players do this, not only do the games run smoother, but that hopefully means I've instilled good habits for them when they go to other GM's tables.

Know your character sheet and basic rules, and get a copy of the rulebook. These are the biggest ones for me. GMing uses a lot of mental bandwidth and trying to keep track of PC's stuff adds a lot to it. Sure, my job is to facilitate play, but that doesn't mean I play for you.

Ouch. This one cuts to the bone.

It's basically like only reading Harry Potter or only playing Skyrim. At the end of the day, this medium as a whole has been a huge lifeline for me and I wanna act like it. The ability to run a game well has basically become a litmus test for my mental health state.

Especially after playing VtM and SWFFG a while back. While I still enjoy running DND, and being able to run it basically in my sleep at this point is valuable, I feel that if you only run/play DND, you don't like playing TTRPGs, you like playing DND specifically, and I don't want to be like that.

Taking what I typically use as my DND setting and taking out the specific DND brand stuff to make it more of a system agnostic fantasy setting has been a fun creative exercise to prep for my Daggerheart session zero. Been wanting to branch out more for a while now,

Ok but no one is talking about how good Daggerheart SMELLS. New card/book smell is the best.

GM Tip: While there's no need to prepare every detail, don't under-prepare because you were afraid your efforts would be wasted. Nothing you make is ever wasted. You can use it later, in this campaign or the next. Even if you never use it, the practice still made you a better GM.

Girl Scout troops routinely meet at our local library using their meeting rooms. There are community groups run out of there for TTRPGs, board games, fiber crafts, and robotics, among others. The library is the third space you’re looking forβ€”you’re allowed to eat & use the bathroom!

I've heard of people doing interviews to see if people fit their #ttrpg group. Have you done this? If so, what has been your experience?

The Kingdom Hearts soundtrack has some fantastic boss tracks, Forze del Male is a personal favorite.

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

Does your character have *A Reputation*?

Do they have fame or infamy? Will strangers they meet have heard of them?

If so, what for? If not, does that change during the story?

Do they want recognition?

Using tarot in TTRPGs in any way is always a banger idea. Had a player use their tarot deck to give NPCs readings and it was always fun to roleplay and I would sometimes pick parts of the readings to turn into plot hooks down the line.

This gives players a way to still have tension without people living in constant fear of players' more combat-focused characters every time an argument happens among characters. I think it gives opportunities for different kinds of tension other than "if the Bard and the Barbarian fight,

To a patron, but we also have to think about the table. The talk I give about PvP in my games goes along the lines of: "if you're gonna do it, everyone involved has to be on board. If not, it's a roleplay scene only."

I'd revisit what it means to be evil in your campaign in a roleplay sense. To me, the best way for evil characters to work in any party is for them to be evil on the party's behalf, which I think is what went wrong here. I know it's evil to be self-serving, such as sacrificing a unicorn

#dndsky, what small thing happened in your game that made a world of difference? One time, a group I was running started writing letters to NPCs in their backstories, resulting in further character development and even plot hooks!

Names. No matter how catchy the name, it'll leave my head if I don't write it down. I also keep notes about what lore the players took a liking to when creating their characters and what they resonate with throughout the sessions so I can build off them in the future.

Taking a mental health break from TTRPGs due to serious GM burnout but thumbing through rulebooks as if I were exploring the hobby for the first time is a nice soft way to rekindle my love of the medium.
