In Nov 2024, Dallas residents passed Prop U with 50.4% of the vote. It amended the city charter to direct most revenue increases to police & fire pensions, up police salaries, & expand the police force.

The consequence: 2/3 of city's budget is spent on police/fire & public libraries are closing.

This would be why I am such a strident critic of digitization as a substitute for actual archival preservation. My sixteenth century documents are far sturdier and likely to survive another 500 years than the detritus on the internet. And digitization is not democratization.

When I was five years old, I snuck a frosting flower from my cousin's wedding cake and devoured it in one huge bite. Friends, it was the most awful, bitter thing I had ever tasted. Just horribly disillusioned.

In my time working for the Council, a lot of things have surprised me about how city government operates. None more so than the fact that Council allocates millions of programmatic dollars, and the mayor just chooses to not spend those dollars to implement those programs. It’s wild!
