i told denji that his shirt was not stained today to acknowledge his good behavior. he seemed to think it was an insult.

so, it must be a pop culture trend. i do my best to keep up with the times, reading teen magazines, and sometimes, i will watch the late-night news.

however, some phenomena naturally miss me, and i am often late in knowing.

hmm… if i substituted it for something else, like strawberry parfaits or milkshake, denji would be more than willing to let me slap him in exchange for some.

i only need one or two cups of coffee.

it is nice to have zaru soba on a hot summer day. it’s cool, light, revitalizing. it has a sense of being special, as it best in a short period of time.

i am not someone with a big appetite, so i do not have many entrées that entice me.

i do not listen to music too often, but i enjoy this particular track, and you could say i am fan of his aesthetics.

mifune can be a handful at times, but is competent when necessary.

she tries to ask me for favors, or to go out with her, but someone has to finish the paperwork. she can be a real procrastinator in the regard.

though, it is unnecessary, i like to walk to class after i do my daily report.

i could be late, but it is worthwhile, seeing hurrying businessmen, elementary students waddling across the crosswalk, and yipping dogs being taken on their morning walk.

i like watching people.

i like to get up early, take the scenic route before heading to the office, and when i enter through the door, i am greeted with warmth.

then, i make my way to the coffee machine—unfortunately, my favorite café is not open this early, so i have to make do.

hmm… it is a beautiful morning, isn’t it?

well, there certainly is a chill in the breeze, but it seems to be refreshing rather than an inconvenience. the transient dawn is quite the experience. the sunrise peeks over the horizon, your skin lit with a sunbeam, cracking like an egg over your head.

hmm, perhaps so. i haven’t spoken to any scorpions lately.

until one day, it got loose and was subsequently hit by a car. from then on, it never barked, became docile and obedient, laid down when ordered to.

it was all beaten out of him.

it struck me when i realized denji has the eyes of that dog. it all came into place then.

i remember an old coworker of mine. he sure was impressive, evading death by devil until the age of forty five.

he had an ill-tempered mutt, that he had found in a shelter, battered, infested with worms, rail thin.

it was unruly and aggressive, even when homed and treated, it did not dissipate.

we all have our roles ingrained into us: scorpions sting, frogs swims, devils kill, and humans… must fall in line with society.

otherwise, well, you might just get stung.

hahaha.

in the frog’s last moments, they cry out, asking why the scorpion would do such a thing.

it is simple. it is in the scorpion’s nature.

fascinating, right?

but the scorpion argues that it would be nonsensical, for if they sting the frog, they will drown too.

the frog acquiesces to that logic.

but it seems they should not have been so trusting; the scorpions stings, the frog is stung, both are at the bottom of the river.

a scorpion asks a frog to ride on its back across the river, for it cannot swim. the frog is wary. after all, aren’t scorpions dangerous? surely, it will sting them.

i like tanashi-sensei. he can be light-hearted, and can put his foot down when necessary.

he was breaking down in his car the other day. i suppose it is from his gambling issues, and that his wife is divorcing him.

if i was not who i am, i would have never known, so he is a good teacher to me.

wouldn’t it be funny if we all united in our differences à la the breakfast club? no matter what circumstance and upbringing you had.

it’s hard to imagine.

bullying is such a common phenomenon: feeling ostracized by your peers, battling self-worth, and feeling you cannot express who you are.

it’s such a shame how common it is nowadays. maybe it has to do with all these sensationalized magazines, and idealized expectations for teen life on the screen.

we all have duties to fulfill for our work, yes? i do my best for my assignment.

on the occasion, yes.

it particularly gets overwhelming around valentine’s day.

denji must have been jealous, because he started going on about how i am a “stalker” and to not be fooled by a pretty face.

i think they were bewildered, and the old lady chastised him for his poor etiquette.

an older gentleman and his wife asked for help to cross the street, denji took one glance, and said, “hell no!”

i would guess because he is disinterested in assisting men. I decided to help them, and the woman said i was handsome and gave me 10,000.

i suppose that is game over, right?

denji and i were skipping stones in the water. we tried to aim at different goals: a mossy log, a soda can, the fountain.

we even targeted a goose. though, that proved to be a mistake.

he boasted that he could skip me.

i proved myself by throwing him into the water, and he sunk like an anvil.

denji has quite the ingenuity in battle. it can be tricky keeping him in line.

i thought it was clever collecting old cigarette scraps, rolling them back up, and selling them back to the homeless and downtrodden.

it would be shocking, if it was anyone other than denji.

i was about to enter a classroom, and i heard mitaka yelling with real frustration at her desk. i suppose she stubbed her foot, or something like that.

i lingered for a bit longer outside, as to not embarrass her.

denji pointed at a mushy yam and said it looked like me. so, i pointed to the trash and said that is what he looked like to me.

i let him punch me.

walking down the street, we saw carrion rotting on the side of the road, and he proudly declared that is what i really look like and smelled like too.
