Almost all of the viral posts reviewed by WIRED came from accounts with blue check marks, meaning they pay X for its premium service and could be eligible to earn money based on how much engagement their posts generate, even if the content is false.

Over and over we see how this goes, and yet people's greed and bias seem to be more important than our continued survival.

Accountability, power, wealth concentration, civilizational direction — are exactly what more people should be wrestling with openly.

The ethical question isn't really whether some people should do better than others — most people accept that. It's whether any individual should accumulate enough power to effectively stand outside the accountability structures that everyone else lives under. That is difficult to justify.

Allowing unlimited wealth concentration while claiming to operate as democratic societies is fundamentally contradictory. Democracy assumes rough equality of political voice... Billionaire-scale wealth makes that fiction impossible to maintain.

The marginal utility of an extra billion dollars to someone who already has fifty is essentially zero compared to what that resource could do distributed differently.

There's also the opportunity cost argument. The resources concentrated in extreme wealth represent roads not built, diseases not researched, children not educated, mental health crises not addressed.
