re: hockey, Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers ever to live, gave up three years in the prime of his life β€” years in which his fighting would have been at peak; actual money incalculable β€” rather than fight in an unjust war, so noping out on grandpa’s burger bash should be an easy choice

Great analysis from the great @thelincoln.bsky.social, with bonus inclusion of some of the most extravagantly awful writing imaginable.

Alysa Liu telling 60 Minutes β€œI love struggling, it makes me feel alive” is a legit revolutionary statement from a Bay Area native in a time when copious amounts of time and resources are being put toward convincing us to opt out of experiencing struggle, friction and self-actualization

i've decided not to listen to the audio of a teacher reporting a kindergartender because frankly I don't want to become the person that that event would turn me into. but one thing I hope we are collectively coming to grips with is what it meant that we have lived among such people this whole time

MIT report: 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing There’s a stark difference in success rates between companies that purchase AI tools from vendors and those that build them internally.

MIT’s NANDA initiative found that 95% of generative AI deployments fail after interviewing 150 execs, surveying 350 workers, and analyzing 300 projects. The real β€œproductivity gains” seem to come from layoffs and squeezing more work from fewer people not AI.

It’s easy to think writing is mainly the transcription of ideas you already haveβ€”that is, until you try to write something worthwhile, and you find what you thought were saying transform into something far more interesting in the process. This skips that last step, and that is *not* an improvement.

Just a reminder that the UC system was not a party in this litigation. Faculty, staff and the @aaup.org fought on their own. UCLA, and the entire UC system, should be ashamed of themselves, and their leaders should be reminded of their submissives every day.
