Used a trio of Harkness discussions to introduce rational exponents to my freshmen algebra students. 1) What is the value of 9^0? 2) 9^-1? 3) 9^ 1/2? We had a nice discussion/analysis of 1 & 2 before moving to 3. This was lovely but hard for us.
