#birdwatching on #OctoberBigDay - 51 species and > 2000 individuals. Not a bad result for October in central #Norway. A lot of migrants have left already - no surprise, as we were met by crispy cold temperatures, but blue sky. ebird.org/tripreport/2...

Birte Maaseide collecting a faeces sample from a shag chick in the colony at Sklinna, central Norway.

Birte Maaseide collecting a faeces sample from a shag chick in the colony at Sklinna, central Norway.

New article on #plastics in #faeces samples of shag chicks. 25 out of 36 samples contained microplastics > 100 Β΅m; we found 17 particles per g dry mass and clear evidence for parental transfer of plastics.

β€œFine-scale foraging behaviour of European Shags in kelp forests"

@ninadehnhard.bsky.social reveals that European Shags spend 83% of their dive time in kelp forests, emphasizing the critical role of kelp habitats in their foraging. 🌳

The fieldseason on Sklinna was a success also this year. Lots of data collected, lots of loggers deployed. Want to know more? - read my blog post:

GPS #biotracking of #shags on Sklinna done for this season. We got 59 of 60 trackers back. GPS & dive loggers help us identify important foraging areas, critical for marine spatial planning. #seabirds #mpa @seapop.bsky.social

Journal of Experimental Biology, A framework to unlock marine bird energetics.
A myriad of BMR multipliers -> An easy-to-follow framework -> Exciting new energetic insights.
We compiled BMR multipliers for you to combine with your data, using our framework to calculate the energy expenditure of any bird.
In the background is a figure illustrating the different marine bird families, their ecological guilds, and whether BMR multiplier data are available. There's also an illustration of a great auk eating a fish.

#NewPaper providing a framework that YOU can use to estimate the amount of energy that any population of marine bird (e.g. #seabirds, ducks, & divers) uses day-to-day.

It was a pleasure to co-lead this with my PhD pal Jamie Duckworth 🐦
