I am the only one still alive of the few other afflicted I knew in my youth. That is no easy burden to carry. I have given my time and my energy and my literal flesh to take that death sentence away from my community. We are now on that path. The survivor’s guilt is nonetheless real.

As of yesterday, I have survived ten years past my expiration date. Though I may age like milk more than wine, I did not succumb to the disability that rightfully should have been my end.
