If Minneapolis Public Schools allows these cuts through, Minneapolis becomes a less safe and welcoming place for immigrants. This cuts off access to citizenship courses, keeping permanent residents vulnerable. ESL class means knowing how to call an ambulance or speak to a nurse without an interp!

These Adult Ed teachers hold state licensure! Adult Ed ESPs hold together the campuses like ESPs hold together your kids' school. They earn their credentials under standards as rigorous as K-12 educators, AND many are bilingual, and/or working with students whose English proficiency is limited. 5/?

Before their latest contract, Adult Ed teachers averaged maybe 60% of a K-12 teacher's pay with equivalent experience. They fought for years and finally won pay parity with their K-12 union siblings, only to be told that their program is going to be bulldozed next year. 4/?

They may teach a GED prep class, a Citizenship course, different levels of ESL, job skills classes, or a combo. Adult Ed ESPs schedule tests, provide translation, and register people for classes. They teach justice-impacted people and young adults getting GEDs. 3/?

MPS's Adult Ed teachers work odd hours, sometimes working 4 hours in the morning and another 4 under a winter moon Those who work a continuous day often have back-to-back classes and flip between online instruction, "Hyflex" classes, and in-person. 2/?

When you work as an organizer you get closest with the workers in your turf. When I started working for MFE, I was assigned a bunch of K-12 schools, mostly over Southside. I was also assigned MFE's Adult Educators, and pretty quickly saw how vital they are and unheralded they were by MPS. 1/?
