Although we’ve made great strides over history the fight is far from over and we need feminism just as much now as we did 60 years ago. Creating art is a great way to share ideas and feelings, and there’s a reason why fascist regimes control and censor the arts. Keep fighting. Keep creating.

The pages used in the paper mâché element were the few I could find that discussed women. The other spread was made using various collage elements, many of which were taken from a biology textbook from the same era, a book whose accurate information on female anatomy was lacking in a few key areas.

I’m forced to feel unsettled, unsafe, and uncomfortable at the state of world every day, and I wanted the people who make me feel that way to confront the thing they wish to control.

Flipping through this 60+ year-old book I found it striking how familiar it all felt. Men in power still try to dominate the narrative, still try to control our bodies and choices. I wanted to make something shocking, something designed to be unsettling.

What I was not expecting was for women’s suffrage to barely be mentioned and not appear in the index at all. In fact, after doing some searching, I found ratio of the word “men” to “women” was approximately 5 to 1.

“Five to One”

When I was given the prompt to “reincarnate” a book, I knew right away that I wanted to use old American history textbooks I had lying around. The books dated back to the 1960’s, and flipping through I was unsurprised to see how scarcely women were included in the conversation.
