Although weβve made great strides over history the fight is far from over and we need feminism just as much now as we did 60 years ago. Creating art is a great way to share ideas and feelings, and thereβs a reason why fascist regimes control and censor the arts. Keep fighting. Keep creating.

The pages used in the paper mΓ’chΓ© element were the few I could find that discussed women. The other spread was made using various collage elements, many of which were taken from a biology textbook from the same era, a book whose accurate information on female anatomy was lacking in a few key areas.

Iβm forced to feel unsettled, unsafe, and uncomfortable at the state of world every day, and I wanted the people who make me feel that way to confront the thing they wish to control.

Flipping through this 60+ year-old book I found it striking how familiar it all felt. Men in power still try to dominate the narrative, still try to control our bodies and choices. I wanted to make something shocking, something designed to be unsettling.

What I was not expecting was for womenβs suffrage to barely be mentioned and not appear in the index at all. In fact, after doing some searching, I found ratio of the word βmenβ to βwomenβ was approximately 5 to 1.

When I was given the prompt to βreincarnateβ a book, I knew right away that I wanted to use old American history textbooks I had lying around. The books dated back to the 1960βs, and flipping through I was unsurprised to see how scarcely women were included in the conversation.

A black and white illustration of a Kauaβi βΕβΕ, a small honeyeater bird. It is sitting on a thin branch that stretches across the canvas above a rectangular black frame. The bird is highlighted with a stippled halo and thin gradient around its mostly-black body. Its head is tilted up and to the left with its beak wide open.

A digital still life painting set against a black background. On the left side is a small orange and yellow gourd with a curved neck and stem, resembling a swan. Next to it is a glass jar with a silver metal lid containing a suspended octopus specimen. The octopus is pale red with white undersides and its tentacles are tangled around its body. Around and on top of the jar are pairs of plastic human molars.

A page of an unfolded accordion book. There is a yellow spider perched on its web in the top right corner. Beneath it, the paper of the panel is cut away and stitched together with white thread to resemble the webbing. The left half of the page features text that reads: βwhat does the spider think of me when i place a fly in its web,β with βmeβ emphasized in larger text. A blue and green house fly sits beneath it in the corner.
A spread of an unfolded accordion book. Soft, light gray fabric is sewn onto the top half of the spread, framing a brown Deer Mouse that sits facing left between the pages. To the right of it is text that reads: βdo the mice enjoy the soft old blankets in the shedβ.
A spread of an unfolded accordion book. On the left side, a brown cat sits facing away from the viewer. To the right is sprawling text that reads: βdoes my cat know the vastness of the meadow when she looks out the windowβ. A brown frame wraps around the entire spread, and the area between the frame and the cat/text is cut out.
A spread of an unfolded accordion book. The top half is cut away in the outline of two mountains. On the left side is text that reads: βand why is my curiosity more valuable than theirs?β. On the right side, a small red-haired figure in blue clothing looks up, standing on the slope of a grassy hill. Behind them are the outlines of pine trees.
Iβm taking a class on artistβs books and went a little nuts with some introspection on the animals I interact with. Itβs called βthe size of curiosity.β #sciart
