A flyer titled “Backstory” with a section called “Background” describing Francis, an elderly Black tenant and Crown Heights resident of 25 years, formerly a superintendent, living in a park-side brownstone. He refused buyouts from various parties. The text explains that in November 2022, the Crown Heights C.A.R.E. Collective, Crown Heights Tenant Union, and Park Place 900s Block Association organized a rally of 150+ people at Francis’s home. Three dozen community members took roles as de-escalators, foot marshals, and speakers. Neighbors set up a rapid response network with 15–30 neighbors arriving at Francis’s home within 30 minutes during crises. The flyer concludes that Francis and his neighbors successfully ended harassment, secured his home, and united the block in an association.
