Oh yeah! They actually had to cut out a part of the new Superman movie where Lex is mean to Krypto because people found it *too* upsetting!

Not that they *can't* be, but that if you set the tone early by showing them doing something uncommonly nice, the readers will wonder and question and re-consider anything morally grey they do from then on out. "But how could he do [x], he's such a nice guy! There must be something else..."

Hello, #SummerOfStory! I'd like to share one of my favourite story devices, a technique I call "Save the Goldfish". If you show your MC immediately doing something nice, like saving a fish flopping on the floor, anything else morally grey is thrown into question for the whole rest of the story
