I think once people are exposed regularly to Bradford in debates etc he’s gonna stall out. He’s got the PP problem of alienating normies whilst Chow and Tory actually charm them.

Wow it’s crazy how I was just thinking how this would impact Brad Bradford’s polling numbers and a finger on my mummified monkey’s paw curled up on its own???

*it didn’t make it. I’m still in there showing some subtle good-intentioned shade at pessimists…something about how incremental wins are still wins.

I’ve always genuinely enjoyed it—useful context and somehow unique enough stylistically to differentiate what you share from the rest of the feed. Works great.

Thanks for sharing Brian—have long aspired to make waves big enough to earn one of your trademark “City, Province/State” quotes tweets, big milestone for me 😉

Every couple of months I post the screenshot in reply to disheartening news and every time it gets hundreds of likes… while participate in it jokingly, this is also the attitude I’m pushing back against.

I didn’t make it into the more recent Star piece but I told the journalist outright that even if the only success of this advocacy was protecting Finch Store, my overarching goal w Another Glass Box is to demonstrate better things thru change is possible. Delighted to now have a visible example.

Almost like shutting down safe consumption sites and funneling money away from harm reduction and into abstinence grifting makes things less safe and increases harms. This is consistent with decades of data and was completely predictable.

The Finch Store battled the city for years after a complaint about its espresso machine. Finally it has a licence to serve “It’s something I consider as a miracle,” said business owner Yana Miriev said about receiving the licence under the new bylaw.

It's newspaper official people. Reminder: Finch is throwing a party on Saturday to celebrate.

Saw Nirvana the Band The Movie on Thursday, which features a lot of Toronto circa 2008, and tomorrow the new Scott Pilgrim game comes out with meticulously drawn pixel art backgrounds from around that time. Toronto lovers are eating good.

Making Music, Making Change Advocacy can take many forms. Being a spokesperson for a cause, attending a protest or signing a petition are all important kinds of political action—but other acts can also have lasting and important...

Elsa was a gracious, fun and informative member on a panel I ran a while back for Tony Price's sonic eulogy for the Ontario Science Centre. It was a really special night, something she captured in this article about it, largely thanks to her contributions. www.canadianarchitect.com/making-music...

Elsa Lam is a national treasure and, while the reason why kind of sucks, I am so glad the general public is learning about her and the trade magazine she runs.

I think it should take fewer than 19 years to approve a new school.

The same goes for the NDP re: Jack Layton and why simply invoking his name isn't enough. Not to get all V for Vendetta, but people are mortal, ideas are not. There needs to be a coherent aspiration for people to attach to.

I am getting blue in the face repeating this, but the success of Mamdani (and, say, Obama) wasn't leveraging new technology or platforms--without a driving ethos and compelling narrative, there isn't an audience for snappy videos or online drives.

The calibre of Toronto’s mayoral challengers is pretty weak, but the fact they have a chance imo is a testament to an inability across progressive Canadian movements to inspire people in the current moment.

I am delighted to share Finch Store is officially covered under the new neighbourhood retail rules. I just got off the phone with the owner—they are hoping to hold a celebration to thank the public. We’re just coordinating a date. Stay tuned.

how can it be that we have no tools of accountability with public dollars spent at a public agency - $97,000,000 gets withered away to the ether and no one can say why - this is criminal

Stateside, neighbourhood retail DOA. I am happy to concede Toronto's version unfortunately ended up a little prescriptive and contained to downtown, but it is actually happening while it is failing elsewhere.

A concrete example of why urban planners need to take a long look in the mirror for endorsing developments that expose more people to public health issues than is remotely necessary. These risks are not unknown and run counter to Public Health Ontario: www.publichealthontario.ca/-/media/docu...
