Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Coastal Physical Oceanography School of Marine Science and Policy, College of Earth, Ocean and Environment University of Delaware Newark, DE Starting Date: 2026-2027 academic year The School of Marine Science and Policy (SMSP) seeks to hire a tenure-track coastal physical oceanographer with research interests in estuaries, continental shelves, or the interface between coastal and open oceans. We seek candidates with research interests from any area of coastal physical oceanography, including a broad set of processes and varying scales: turbulence and mixing, meso- and submesoscale dynamics, boundary layers, shelf-wide circulation and property budgets, and the impact of climate on the coastal ocean, among others. Applications of candidates that integrate field observations, theory, or numerical modeling are welcome.
The School of Marine Science & Policy at the University of Delaware is hiring! We are looking for a talented Coastal Physical Oceanographer to join us.
More information is available here, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

21.11.2025 12:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Our paper on a new ice shelf basal melt parameterisation is out! tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/...
Small-scale processes in the ocean drive ice shelf basal melt, and large-scale ocean models canโt resolve these processes. Therefore, models use melt parameterisations, but these can still be improved.

The #ISMIP7 ice-ocean Antarctic focus group is recruiting a 2.5 year postdoc on ice-shelf basal melting at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. A great way to develop international collaborations and contribute to the improvement of sea level projections!

Yesโnice talk! My sense is still that the Antarctic overturning response is reversible and varies more smoothly with freshwater forcing than an AMOC that is near a critical transition. The more concerning thing with the Antarctic problem is perhaps that the freshwater forcing is itself nonlinear.
19.11.2025 01:12 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0AMOC tipping is particularly worrisome because the salt advection feedback implies that it may actually be irreversible. It seems a bit misleading to compare SMOC decline to it for that reason.
18.11.2025 13:00 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Is "tipping point" really an appropriate term to use here? I am not aware of any evidence that the SMOC decline would be irreversible. If CO2 concentrations were brought back down to ~280 ppm, wouldn't DSW formation and export just start right back up again?

This gets at what I think is a fundamental problem with most well-intentioned, public minded SRM work โ the governance requirements for ethical SRM would seem to be a subset of the governance requirements that would allow any plausible need for SRM to be avoided.
