THE UGLY STEPSISTER: Body Horror At The Oscars The writer/director of one of the year's best films joins her makeup team to discuss the film's many FX challenges, and its nomination at the Academy Awards.

Ahead of the Oscars, I spoke with director Emilie Blichfeldt and makeup designers Thomas Foldberg and Anne Catherine Saurberg about their excellent film, The Ugly Stepsister, and what that nomination means for a film like this. Read it here:

Might be my favorite lineup since 2017's of

Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Kaluuya, Daniel Day-Lewis and Denzel Washington. Ruined only, of course, by Gary Oldman's horrendous work (and win) for The Darkest Hour

Funny to see so much consternation about who might win Best Actor this year when I think, top to bottom, it's the best lineup we've had in many years. Not a bad performance in the bunch, in fact, all five are pretty terrific. Wouldn't be mad at any of em. It's Wagner Moura tho

One of the few movies I try to sell people on by simply saying "trust me, you've never seen anything like this before"

In case you’re wondering, yes, my history of the stuntman on film piece included in this set covers Daffy Duck in β€œA Star is Bored”

One of the great, under-rated movies.

Losing my dang mind

Lapid's prior work has felt angry and forceful, like he's trying to scream sense into his fellow Israelis. With Yes, it's not so much anger as it is revulsion. He's done trying to change minds, maybe it's better to just see how far gone you are.

25.02.2026 00:55 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

One of the few films that takes the idea of a Free Palestine not only as read but as a statement of fact. Lapid operates from the position that you should understand that Israel's existence is fully built on subjugation, and here's how that's warped the minds of its people.

25.02.2026 00:54 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Can't stop thinking about Nadav Lapid's latest, Yes. By eliminating the question of "is this a Genocide?" (answer's in the title), Lapid can fully focus on the utter depravity of the Israeli propaganda machine and the eager submission of its citizens. Wild stuff

I always go a few years without watching Hard Boiled and feel like it's one of those all timers that I never need to watch it again and then I show it to someone and get to watch their reaction to it and immediately wonder why I don't watch it 3 times a year

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Chime is coming to IFC Center on March 27th. Only 45 minutes and some of the scariest shit I've evers seen.

23.02.2026 20:23 β€” πŸ‘ 51    πŸ” 6    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 3

I like when modern filmmakers are like "oh I can't comment on that" when it comes to politics and Tsui Hark, years before the handoff, was like "Fuck England, Fuck Hong Kong, Fuck China, Fuck America, Fuck You"
