But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed.

After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century β€œwoke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of BartlomΓ© de las Casas.

there are more urgent global matters than the need for RFK to resign but domestically there are few if any more pressing. The harm he has already done is immense; the harm he's poised to do is incalculable

Friendly reminder if Medicaid gets cut I will very literally, not hypothetically, die. That’s just a fact. And there are millions of others just like me. We’re not just numbers, we’re not just political topics, we’re not just plot points and percentages. We are very real. Please remember that.

Help Ruaa and her family I'm helping my friend, Ruaa Naji, raise funds to help her family survive.

This app is getting more restrictive, food is running out, and our help is needed more than ever. I have two tasks for us:

- Give & boost for Ruaa who is supporting her family in a severely dangerous area.
- TAKE ACTION. We need all hands and it's safer in numbers. Cause problems.

Another lawmaker heading to El Salvador to demand Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release.

"This is not just one family’s
nightmare; it is a constitutional crisis that should outrage every single one of us,” says Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-Ore.). β€œI will travel to El Salvador to confront this crisis head on."

Anyone saying protests are dead are the same people who start wildly unsustainable fitness regimes on January 1st and immediately crash out and say being healthy is out of reach. Little by little is how you eat an elephant.

Hi All, I sent this post out yesterday. The Russian campaign against Ukrainian cities and civilians is being directly supported by Trump's policy of depriving Ukraine of more Patriot missiles. Its indicative of how the US is changing sides.

the budget proposal is evil

it's just warfare on US people, anyone & everyone here, the proposed cuts are everywhere: all ages, rural, urban, education, health, preventative care, plans to separate families & let old or disabled ppl die

evil

If your Rep or Senator isn't capable of doing Van Hollen-style stuff β€” for cowardice reasons, or because they're infirm, or they're belatedly sucking up to a dying Trump movement, or really any other reason β€” you should primary them. It's gonna take a lot more stuff like this. All hands on deck.

the thing I hate most about that rfk quote is that autistic lives have value and worth and beauty and dignity whether they are able to do the things other people do or not. no one is defined by ability or lack thereof and to frame divergence as lack is monster stuff, utterly godless

fun historical fact: among the core political forces in the development of mass incarceration was the "Victims' Rights Movement". Its first major legislative national legislative victory was under President Reagan. The prison population doubled under his administration.

If you're an elected Democrat and you don't speak out about Trump's proposal to jail American citizens in a foreign torture dungeon for life, what are you even doing in public office? Why have the job?

deeply hate the distinction of "American citizens" here. it's also bad if they send non-citizens to a gulag. it's bad ifβ€”gaspβ€”they send undocumented people to a gulag. it's bad if they send literally anyone to a gulag!!!

So essentially the president can do anything he wants, regardless of whether or not that’s his constitutional power, say no when told otherwise, and there’s really no mechanisms in this country to stop him? The branches of government and checks and balances were all just suggestions?
