what makes this convo even MORE complex is that getting good at art and learning to make it appealing is yet ANOTHER conversation but it's more technical and not every big artist displays super high skill, exceptions are made, and vice versa. Lots of nuances I'm glossing over but iykyk.

There is another set of advice when it comes to growing your account and yeah it is possible to strike a balance between growth and enjoying the art you're making but if you're a hobbyist I also would advise to loving the process more than the result.

Not to carry over Twitter discussion over here but imo the reason why larger artists will advise to "draw for yourself" is because chasing numbers with throughput + people pleasing can sour your relationship with art.
