She hums, but when she does it, it sounds a little condescending as she flips through her appointment book. “When you’re done.” She points to Neuvillette’s office. “A little scenting won’t bother either of you.” Say what. “I’m not—I don’t—” He definitely does not scent Neuvillette. Scenting a beta does nothing, anyhow. Wriothesley might enjoy his presence, might find comfort in that gentle scent of his, but that’s all that it is. Long-time friends. The pining is… pining, but Wriothesley is a-okay with that.

He tugs, gently, and Wriothesley fits their hips closer together, pressing against Neuvillette’s body. “I deserve what I want,” he says. “And what I want is you, Wriothesley. It has always been you. Please, do not turn away from me now.” Wriothesley seizes Neuvillette’s mouth in a hungry, needy kiss. “Never,” he whispers into Neuvillette’s mouth before slicking his tongue over Neuvillette’s lips.

And Neuvillette realizes that Wriothesley is waiting for him to be far blunter than he would like to be, to be, as their contract states, transparent. Honest. “It would be inconvenient for you to leave.” “Mm. Probably would be.” Neuvillette sighs. “You could stay,” he finally ventures. “If that is not violating the spirit of our agreement.”

And then, later, Wriothesley might pull Neuvillette aside, might confess to him that his heart is too full in the way the Neuvillette’s is, and Neuvillette might, at last, have someone to love and be loved by on the Solstice. How wonderful that might be. What a shame it must remain a fantasy.

I said this over on the bird site, but a fic published a few years ago isn't "old." Fic writers aren't content machines, and you don't owe anyone a constant output of new works to remain relevant. Your stories don't become unreadable after a certain date. Fics don't expire.
