At Haworth Parsonage there are badges with β€˜Team Branwell’ on, and it’s like why? Give me one single reason why.

They talk to each other too and look after each other. This blew my mind when I found this out

To all agents, presses, prizes and any other gatekeepers of creativity; if you are as inclusive as your EDI statement suggests, you need to make submissions anonymous. You don’t need a bio to tell you if you believe in the work. Lack of anonymity risks unconscious bias. See below for best practice

Will have a look at By the Ionian Sea, it’s quite well regarded I think. Jubilee I read and enjoyed a lot, especially as I know the areas he describes eg Camberwell πŸ–€

On her deathbed, to her husband, Charlotte BrontΓ« referring to God in saying β€œOh, I am not going to die, am I? He will not separate us. We have been so happy.”

Most tragic but beautiful thing to say possible πŸ–€

A lot of you are using "performative" to mean "as lip service" and the phrase lip service exists for that purpose.

I feel like something that rarely gets brought up in Wuthering Heights discourse is that it’s the most beautifully written novel of the century. More like a prose poem with characters than any other novel of the period.

I’m looking forward to having read them all and then circling back to The Italian and Udolpho, seeing what I think of them all in relation to each other. And very much looking forward to your expertise! πŸ–€

Ruby by Rosa Guy (1991) springs to mind although not sure if it has a HEA - haven’t read it in a long time

Oh yes I see. I find he doesn’t really provide solutions, much more true to life in that way, things go on and people just muddle through. Will check out the MLQ essay, thank you

I liked The Odd Women a lot, and The Nether-World too. The honeymoon of Pennyloaf and Bob was heartbreaking. I find his writing generally compelling but The Whirlpool I found misogynistic and pointless - odd that is it still in print compared to his many others.

Yes I’ve noticed the same both in teaching and in my own studies. The tragedy is even women leading the module etc do this stuff.
I also have to say, whoever didn’t hire you for that particular module was clearly out of their mind.

I guess if it’s it something youve thought about πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ trying to be generous here. The lack of attention to Aphra Behn does rile me though, and that is within the academy too tbf
