I've just today been listening to the audiobook of Injustice, including the part on how early in the investigation the DoJ began gathering info on thousands of purchases of the components found in those devices.

One more thought: I'm not surprised Allie Beth Stuckey is feeling defensive. The idea that empathy is "toxic" or "sinful" does lead straight to taking glee out of shooting helpless civilians out of the water. Seeing anti-empathy in action makes it hard defend.
