They were only considered descriptive because people were ignorant about the disabilities they were trying to describe in the first place. That’s why official medical terms are changed. Words that are accurate medical terms aren’t considered slurs regardless of how they may be used as insults.

Euphemisms for disability are unintentionally derogatory because their existence implies that there is something wrong with being disabled, that it’s something that shouldn’t be talked about directly. We are disabled, not “differently abled”, not “special”, disabled.

They’re already derogatory, it doesn’t matter if they’re used in good faith. The problem is not ignorance, it’s refusing to learn and do better. If disabled people agree a word is offensive then simply don’t use that word.

Those words ARE the real problem, they are disrespectful at their core because they were designed to be. You cannot demand we respect those who are different while using terms that have always been inaccurate and insulting.

No, words that are now considered slurs were always derogatory towards disabled people because that’s how we were viewed when those words were created. Modern terms are created with input from disabled people to accurately describe us rather than dehumanising us.

G*psy has always been a slur, it was a term used by Europeans who assumed Roma came from Egypt due to their dark skin, it was a racist term from the beginning.

“Previous clinical terms” were born out of ignorance and designed to be derogatory, that’s why disabled people reject them.
