i’m taking on a new personal project this month. i’ve just collected a large collection of 35mm film negatives of black american life in the 1970s and 1980s and am going to begin digitizing them into an archive of their own.

i’ll write about my progress here.

What DEI threatens isn’t merit. It’s monopoly. Political science professor Hakeem Jefferson argues for DEI's importance to de-monopolizing universities.

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argueβ€”poorlyβ€”against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond.

I hope you’ll read and share the piece.

My latest piece for @teenvogue.com delves into the horrific story of popular skincare ingredient Retin-A.

Before Retin-A was approved by the FDA in 1971, it had been tested on hundreds of incarcerated Black people in Philadelphia, without their informed consent. The survivors still bear the scars.

β€œLet me clarify. I am 100% correct.” Is a fun way to double down. Especially if you are indeed correct.

I've been writing a series of essays for PBS on men whose style I admire. The latest is about James Baldwin, a man who knew how to sing through clothes.
