One of the things the producers told me was how Ben Vereen was such a powerful advocate on set for what was at stake in getting these stories right. #HATM #TheGrayHouse

As hard as it is to watch her freedom papers be torn up, Iβm glad they showed this. A pass or freedom papers were only as good as the white man who encountered them. Nothing prevented him from destroying them and doing whatever he wanted. #HATM

Richmond's iconic Maggie Walker was the first Black woman to charter a bank and serve as a bank president. She was born during the Civil War to Elizabeth Draper, who was enslaved by the Van Lews. Walker & Van Lew both lived in Richmond for over 30 yrs & likely knew one another. #HATM #TheGrayHouse

Is Elizabeth Varon on Bluesky? I havenβt found her yet.

Reminder that the issue of slavery in the US's new Western territories was a key cause of the sectional crisis that led up to the war.
Additional reminder that most of that land remained under the control of Native people until after the war.

I canβt remember who recommended it last week, but the talk about cotton production earlier is making me think about a section of this book that discusses Birmingham
(Thank you to the person who recommended it! Iβm learning a lot!)

There was no Richmond Chronicle in the Civil War era - just the Despatch, the Examiner, the Enquirer, the Sentinel, and the Whig. But an editor would have been quite prominent. #hatm

I went through 20,000 pages of 1850s and 1860s newspapers for my dissertation and book. Oh my, it was an experience.
My favorite quote: an 1869 conservative paper called WV's ratification of the 15th Amendment "the act of a hog and horse thieving legislature." Ouch.

To be clear, Elizabeth Van Lew's father did NOT emancipate them when he died. He left his enslaved people to his wife Eliza. He later added a codicil revoking her full control saying they were to pass to their children upon her death. #HATM

The idea that weβre a republic and not a democracy is a rhetorical fallacy.
The failures in our country & itβs less than representative features are our fault- not that of long dead founders.

Ooo... John Bell shout-out!
Bell was the 4th candidate in the election of 1860. He was part of the newly created Constitutional Union Party... their position on slavery was basically "shhhh, let's not talk about it."
They took TN, KY, and VA. #HATM
