The FHT approach we present in this article is freely available and can be replicated by other researchers, and its flexibility can be used to adjust the classification of households to serve specific research needs or to fit specific datasets with information on familial relations. /FIN

Average poverty risk by household type, Eurostat household typology and our FHT approach

This also has implications for measuring poverty. The poverty risk of single parents is often overestimated when the Eurostat household typology is adopted. When single parents co-residing with kin or unrelated adults are correctly identified, their average poverty risk tends to be much lower. /6

The results also show that nearly half of all single parents in Europe live with another adult and are not captured as single parents under conventional typologies. This means that many single-parent households may be excluded from targeted support due to misclassification. /5

E.g. the FHT reduces the share of individuals placed in the residual ‘other’ category from over 20% to around 5%, particularly improving identification in Southern, Central, and Eastern European countries where multigenerational living arrangements are common. /4

In our new research published in Journal of European Social Policy, we introduce the Families in Households Typology (FHT), a classification system that uses relationship identifiers in EU-SILC microdata to reconstruct family structures in households. This strongly reduces the North-Western bias. /3

This approach fails to capture increasing family diversity across Europe and introduces a persistent North-Western bias into data and policymaking. As a result, families that do not fit conventional models may be misclassified or entirely overlooked in poverty assessments and policy targeting. /2

European statistics and policies commonly rely on household typologies that classify households based on the number of adults and children living together. However, these typologies overlook family relationships and classify any non-standard arrangement into a broad residual category of ‘other’. /1

Ja, maar het begrotingstekort in die periode hangt sterk samen met de pandemie. Het is gewoon onjuist om dat op het conto van armoedebestrijding te schrijven.

'Geloof je echt dat de armoede is gedaald door Vivaldi?', vraagt Bart De Wever zich af. Het antwoord is heel simpel: jazeker. En zelfs zeer fors. Dat is geen geloof maar een feit. Laat ons Amerikaanse toestanden waarin iedere politicus of partij zijn eigen waarheid creëert maar best vermijden.

Als de studietoelage een instrument wordt om succes te belonen en falen te bestraffen, dan zal ze de diplomakloof tussen arm en rijk vergroten. In plaats van broodnodige ondersteuning wordt de studiebeurs een financieel risico. Niet doen.

I met an absolutely lovely academic who asked whether my department back home is affected by ICE -- a question dramatizing how little info is getting out.

For the record, the small example I chose:

In het boek "Waarheid" [sic] van Rik Torfs staan 7 onbestaande citaten van schrijvers, en ook onbestaande literatuurverwijzingen.

De citaten zijn zo lang en gedetailleerd dat dit enkel het gevolg kan zijn van AI-gebruik. Torfs ontkent.

Terug naar negentiende-eeuws liberalisme met Frédéric De Gucht Jef Maes is auteur van Onze sociale zekerheid. Ervaringen en voorstellen en gewezen topman bij het ABVV. Hij vindt dat Anders-voorzitter Frédéric De Gucht teruggrijpt naar negentiende-eeuwse recepten....

Jef Maes heeft overschot van gelijk. "Heel het sociale discours van De Gucht klinkt origineel en (..) eenvoudig. Maar de facto is het niets anders dan (..) de liberale recepten van de negentiende eeuw, waarbij de overheid niets mocht doen op sociaal vlak."

Het zijn alvast de zeer klassieke AI-hallucinaties (citaten, referenties) waarvoor we studenten in de beperkte examencommissie hard aanpakken. Het zal zijn ghostwriter geweest zijn. :-)

Laat niemand hem vertellen dat er *boeken* over dat thema bestaan, of hij verandert weer van gedacht!
