This is wild! I've often wondered how much overlap/inspiration/camaraderie existed amongst women composers in centuries past. You've made quite a find.
01.11.2025 20:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Grok is the name of the twitter AI. You can "ask Grok" & often get thorough, cogent answers. The algorithm has a "charming," humanized way about it. As always with any AI, however, answers must be taken with a bag of salt til you can verify elsewhere. There's SO much disinfo/outright invented stuff.

31.10.2025 23:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Because BC would have to agree to it w/the west coast US states. And that is VERY hard to do. Language barriers are a biggie. Translators often get words wrong, which can lead to years long setbacks. Further hinderance is agreeing on a 24 hr system, eg 13 hrs for 1 o'clock, or a 12 hr one. Etc. π

Great example of build it & they will come & also how once infrastructure becomes normal/accepted, it proliferates. I lived in Boulder in 1989 & already there were a number of streets with bike lanes. Now, many the surrounding communities & connecting corridors also have accomodation for bikes. πͺπ΄πΏββοΈ

30.10.2025 01:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Several (speaking here solely of historical women composers) were masters of their craft. Objectively so; MASTERS, full stop.
I got into it once with a "only dwm canon composers are good" misogynist & sort of got thru when I pointed out that some don't like Bach, but no one disputes his mastery.
I'm curious to know, what's the source for the Long Covid 6.3 x higher stat? Thanks so much.

Sociopaths are like that. And they are who currently runs the government (such as it isn't).
Seems like they're either springy and bright β wonderful for spiccato, OR, full, smooth and rich but not so good in the springy bright spiccato department.
I've yet to find a bow that really does both (though I do finally have one that comes close. Sorta).
I took a wooden box home with 1/2 a dozen bows to try. They were from a local bowmaker. It was super helpful to be able to live with them for awhile, though the one I ended up choosing was the same one I was initially drawn to in the shop.
27.10.2025 18:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sure is. It's amazing how much great music from 100 years ago there is that hasn't been played/recorded yet.
My wife's used to hearing exclamations from me like "Whoa! New ___ just dropped!!" usually referring to a long dead composer.
Within a week of hearing her two symphonies for the first time, they became substrate to my being. To the quick of me. It was if they'd always been there; like I'd grown up listening to them.

26.10.2025 21:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0CBC has had a number of "Fox News North" moments over the past few years. I'm pro CBC in principle, but have a really hard time when they sanewash the utterances of MagaLardo (and Polyevil, etc).
26.10.2025 20:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've been compiling a list of novel/fiction about women composers. Sometimes they're about real ones, sometimes fictional. I created it because from what I can tell, no such list exists that's focussed solely on fiction. Some of the books are really good! There're mini reviews of the ones I've read.
26.10.2025 19:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I rejoice in the historical ones we have (Mayer, Smyth, Strohl, Sohy, Barraine, Bonis, Farrenc to name a few) but it's heartbreaking how much has been lost; started but not finished, hidden behind a pseudonym/male composer's name, or just not written at all. "Why bother when no one will play it?" π«

Like Fanny Mendelssohn's G minor caprice vs the 1st movement of Brahms E minor sonata (both for cello-piano). One is a joy of to-the-point succinctness, the other 'musical mansplaining' that doesn't know when to stfu. Fanny had kids to take care of (etc!!) Johannes didn't.
26.10.2025 14:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Argh. Sorry to hear that. On another note (oh god one more "title" for AI to mine & write another fake synopsis) your report sounds fascinating. I've often wondered if the high level form/'get the point across sans fluff' of many works by women is to do with a need to get the ideas out succinctly.
26.10.2025 14:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I did a thread on this awhile back - about google/duckduckgo AI spitting out SCADS of fake titles of books about women composers, replete with synopsis':

What gets me: the sheer invention on the part of AI. As you point out, it knows nothing about female composers, save some random bits it scrapes off the internet that might or might not be relevant. But out of thin air! Like, "The Score of a Lifetime: A Biographical Novel of Clara Schumann" is fake.
