YR ARDALYDD A GAFODD EI DDAL YN GORYRRU DRWY BENTREF GAERWEN
Mae Henry Paget, 5ed Ardalydd Môn (1875-1905) yn adnabyddus am ei fywyd afradlon. Newidiodd y capel ym Mhlas Newydd yn theatr a gwariodd ei ffortiwn ar wisgoedd lliwgar, gemwaith, ffwr ac ar lwyfannu perfformiadau theatrig yn ei gartref ar Ynys Môn.
Ar y 30ain o Dachwedd 1901, ysgrifennodd L. Prothero, Prif Gwnstable Porthaethwy at Asiant yr Ardalydd yn dweud :
Rwyf wedi derbyn adroddiad gan y Cwnstabl yn Gaerwen for modus Ardalydd Môn yn teithio ar ‘gyflymder aruthrol’ tua 30 milltir yr awr, drwy bentref Gaerwen am 11.35 yb ddydd Sul diwethaf…
Nid wyf yn dymuno i achos gael ei ddwyn [yn ei erbyn] gan y gallai fod wedi ei wneud yn ddifeddwl a chan mai ychydig o bersonau sydd yn teithio ddydd Sul, ond y mae teithio mor gyflym trwy bentref bob amser yn beryglus i blant a all redeg yn sydyn ar draws y ffordd.
Mae’r llun hwn yn dangos yr Ardalydd gyda’i yrrwr ac o bosib y car a ddaliwyd yn goryrru trwy bentref Gaerwen!
Mae’r ffilm Madfabulous am fywyd Henry Cyril Paget, pumed Ardalydd Môn, ar fin cael ei ddangos yn y misoedd nesaf, dyma lythyr gan Brif Gwnstabl Porthaethwy a anfonwyd at asiant yr Ardalydd oherwydd bod yr Ardalydd yn gyrru’n gyflym drwy bentref Gaerwen.

THE MARQUESS THAT WAS CAUGHT SPEEDING THROUGH THE VILLAGE OF GAERWEN
Henry Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey (1875-1905) is well known for his extravagant lifestyle. He converted the chapel at Plas Newydd into a theatre and spent his fortune on flamboyant costumes, jewellery, furs and on staging theatrical performances in his home on Anglesey.
On the 30th of November 1901, L. Prothero, Chief Constable of Menai Bridge wrote to the Agent for the Marquess stating :
I have received a report from the Constable at Gaerwen that the Marquis of Anglesey’s motor was travelling at a ‘tremendous speed’ about 30 miles an hour, through the village of Gaerwen, at 11.35 am on Sunday last….
I do not wish that proceedings be taken, as it may have been done unthinkingly, as few persons travel on Sunday, but travelling so fast through a village is always dangerous to children who may run suddenly across the road.
This image shows the Marquess with his chauffeur and possibly the car that was caught speeding through the village of Gaerwen!
With the film Madfabulous about the life of Henry Cyril Paget, the fifth Marquess of Anglesey scheduled to premiere in the coming months, here we have a letter from the Chief Constable of Menai Bridge sent to the Marquess’ agent on account of the Marquess speeding through the village of Gaerwen.

The Cob at Porthmadog was completed in 1811 by William Maddocks but was breached the following year by a great storm. This is a subscription list put forward by the Viscount Bulkeley of Baron Hill to help repair the damage, where hundreds of local men had also offered their labour. The Poet Shelley was living nearby at Plas Tan yr Allt, Tremadog at the time, hence his contribution.

Here we have a map showing the course of the Afon (River) Adda through Bangor. Very little of the Adda is visible today as it has been culverted and runs beneath the city.
