Even though it’s unenforceable, as of today it is illegal to prescribe puberty blockers to a trans child in Aotearoa. We now know that the Ministry recommended against this, that no one asked for it, and no one thought it was a good idea except for cabinet. This ban is a stain on our history.

The Paediatric Society of NZ - representing the clinical field most relevant here - have released maybe the strongest statement of all the medical bodies: “puberty blockers are an established, safe, reversible, and
life-saving treatment option”

For context, these were due to be published in March 2025. The NZ govt prevented their publication because they intended to ban puberty blockers and the guidelines show they are safe, effective, and standard care internationally. Today they were released in an OIA putting them in the public domain.

NZ is consulting the public on regulations for puberty blockers – this should be a medical decision not a political one Puberty blockers don’t necessarily result in a measurable effect at the time they are taken. The main impact is seen when people are older and may need to seek surgery and hormone treatments.

PATHA's VP Dr Rona Carroll in the Conversation this morning with a clear explainer of what puberty blockers are, why the quality of the evidence is low, and why access to care is vital. There must not be further restriction to this care - to do so would be on purely political grounds.
