Countering "He's a commie!" with free healthcare is a lot easier as a fight than countering it with 'i will make healthcare less expensive but, to be firm, still very expensive'.

I think the issue there is that Actual Liberal Policies are pretty popular. By refusing to hold them it leaves people like Newsom vulnerable to Fox News "he's a commie!" without actually being able to offer anything in return.

I think there is something to be said for giving speeches that are unapologetically leftist. It at least breaks out of the boring Politics As Usual mould and so might get some attention that way.

But you don't have to like someone to think that what has been done to them is wrong.

Cases like this are just another form of radicalisation and people who have been radicalised have, on some level, had something done to them.
