BONUS EPISODE β Live from Fort Lauderdale β is now available: lookbothwayspod.podbean.com/e/bonus-epis...
Get answers to all your South Florida transportation questions, like "What happens when a Brightline train meets a sidewalk robot?"
So I'll be talking about this exact problem at next week's Safe Roads Summit in Fort Lauderdale... as well as about the former CEO of Studebaker that tricked generations of traffic engineers into measuring road safety the way he wanted (where the more we drive, the safer we seem).
#SafeRoadsSummit
Episode 16 is up!
Wes and David delve into the challenges rural transportation β and ask whether autonomous vehicles might provide a solution.
Also, how bad is the "bikelash" roiling many US cities?

Steven Mark Davis was very literally Killed by a Traffic Engineer...
(thanks to @nosquish.bsky.social for sending this my way)
What is "rural urbanism" you ask?
Or maybe you didn't ask, but you are still welcome to tune in and find out
Daniel is right.
"Improving mobility"is a less compelling transit talking point than "reducing congestion," but it's more honest.

βOn the latest episode, David and Wes discussed an inconvenient truth for urbanists:
Better transit service will improve regional mobility, butβ let's be honestβit won't actually reduce traffic congestion. (Blame induced demand.)
Last week, we talked about the Future of Useful Transit & how Denver's transit agencyβwho recently declared a shift towards prioritizing big eventsβis misdiagnosing the problem
This week, this same transit agency decided to do exactly what we suggested: increase frequency
(correlation β causation)
And my topic is... road safety.
(well, it is the Safe Roads Summit)
No new @lookbothwayspod.bsky.social this week
but catching up with John Simmerman & @activetowns.bsky.social is always a good time
My daughter started Driver's Ed yesterday...
and this Word Search is one of the mandatory assignments.
In other words, she won't be allowed to even take her driver's permit test unless she can conquer this first.
It's true! We agreed that one (1) Trump idea for transportation is genuinely terrific. (Hint: It's not dressing up before going to the airport.)
Thanks for the kind words, @jordihoney.bsky.social.

David likes Amtrak's Quiet Car. Wes does, too β but he also wants a Party Car.

@wesmars.bsky.social and I discuss why a lot of robotaxi fans to get very touchy when challenged.
They did at an earlier stage - when they were trying to pass off overall safety as the same between the two alternatives - but I have not yet seen any data to support their safety downgrade of the full road diet plan
23.01.2026 20:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
It's honestly wild that Denver presented a road diet plan as being "good" for ped safety back in December but now says that same plan would only have "moderate" safety benefits
Yet, the new plan for a weird, unbalanced partial road diet with more lanes of thru traffic is rated as "good" for safetyπ€£
@davidzipper.bsky.social took some hits last week, but he's not wrong to ask these questions.
We talk about the controversy in the next episode of the
@lookbothwayspod.bsky.social
podcast coming tomorrow...
Mamdani is busy, and I just love that he didn't appoint a blue ribbon commission for every stupid thing.
As seen on the next episode of the @lookbothwayspod.bsky.social podcast coming tomorrow...
Wait, is today Tuesday?

Not only that, but I want an interactive website where I can click on any road & see which engineer stamped it
I then want to compare how the safety stats of these various stampers stack up against one another
& I even kind of want baseball-style cards for engineers with safety stats on the back
