Title VIII: Funding: Summer Language Workshop: Language Workshop: Indiana University Bloomington Title VIII Fellowships

Since the 1950s, Summer Language Workshops at Indiana University have provided training in Russian, East European, and Central Asian languages. Generations have come to Bloomington to study Romanian, Polish, Kazakh, etc.

Help a book review editor out! Who is working on post-Soviet and contemporary Russian media (news, internet, digital media, etc.) who might be interested in reviewing books for @russianreview.bsky.social? Hoping to update my list because right now it is pretty small.

By no means complete (yet!) here's how I am trying to following the musings of those whose work falls under the sports diplomacy umbrella. Let me know who I have missed, or who should be added as they join!

Haven't seen one of these for SHAFR / US in the World people, so thought I'd make one given that I'm currently trapped under a cat. Happy to add people!

Defectors: How the Illicit Flight of Soviet Citizens Built the Borders of the Cold War World

Excited to talk about Defectors at next week’s Washington History Seminar with two scholars whose work has inspired and influenced me over the years. www.wilsoncenter.org/event/defect...

I had fun talking about Defectors with Sean Guillory and Rusana Cieply of @euraknot.bsky.social, one of my favorite podcasts. Here's the link to our discussion: www.patreon.com/posts/defect...

It is an amazing image. I’m actually working on an article right now about this series, the 1988 tour of the Atlanta Hawks to the USSR that followed, and the privatization of the Soviet sports empire at the Cold War’s end.

My first book was on the concept of internal diasporas in the USSR and focused on Georgians. My second book (Defectors) looks at a range of different emigre/diaspora groups and their responses to those fleeing the Soviet Union.

Thanks for getting this thread started! I work on the history of the multiethnic Soviet Union, migration, diaspora, and comparative empires.

One of the most disgusting things about being an academic now is too see so many smart, talented people, colleagues, putting abstract concepts and theories--realism, restraint, decolonization, resistance--above basic humanity and respect for life. Not the finest hour/day/year of the intellectuals
