Mike Morris SPILLS THE TEA on BC's FAILING forestry sector
My interview with former MLA for Prince George-Mackenzie Mike Morris is LIVE on YouTube. Mike gives a WILD inside view of the stranglehold the timber industry has over the BC government and how industry lawyers basically wrote the forestry legislation for themselves.

Comox Valley flooding linked to clearcut logging
I've got a new video on my YouTube channel, The Cutblock, about the recent #ComoxValley #floods and the connection to #clearcutting in the #watersheds. We also look at a road washout + dirty drinking water in the CVRD, also linked to #clearcut #logging.

Clear-cutting linked to 18-fold rise in extreme floods, UBC study finds - UBC News
New research finds long-term impacts on flood size and frequency decades after trees are removed
Also, go read the hydrological research of Dr. Younes Alila from UBC Forestry whose studies have shown that clearcut logging can increase flood frequency by as much as 18x and double flood magnitude:

For anyone who is skeptical about whether clearcut logging in Washington state is affecting the flood regime in the Nooksack River, here is a quick satellite timelapse of the loss of forest cover in the Nooksack watershed since 1984. This is a big part of what's driving floods and droughts.

The hidden impacts of clear-cut logging, revealed
With the floods in Washington and Southern BC right now, this is a good time to watch our 25-minute documentary 'Trouble in the Headwaters'. The 2018 Grand Forks flood was the canary in the coal mine warning us about how clearcut logging can lead to massive floods.

This headline is getting lost in the noise around Eby saying he wants to amend DRIPA. He wanted the press release without the obligations. But the court decided that DRIPA is enforceable law. And if the BC NDP wants to gut DRIPA, the law says they will have to consult First Nations first. Oopsie.

Did we hear that right? Is Forest Minister Parmar trying to gaslight us? π€
Every day, irreplaceable #oldgrowth and critical habitat continue to fall while the BC NDP government claims progress.
If youβre tired of talk-and-log politics, nowβs the moment to act.

B.C.'s Indigenous rights law is legally enforceable, rules court
In a split ruling, the B.C. Court of Appeal ruled the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) is an 'interpretive lens' through which B.C. laws must be viewed and measured
Huge win for a indigenous rights in Canada. It was absurd to begin with that BC could pass a DRIPA law and then claim that it wasn't enforceable. The court decided that DRIPA is more than a press release. It's the law. Sadly Eby is now looking to amend DRIPA.

Why was βincredibleβ giant cedar cut down, despite B.C.βs big-tree protection law?
Joshua Wright says a yellow cedar tree he photographed last year was βincredible,β the largest heβd ever seen in a decade of hiking around Vancouver Island.
Industry will point the finger at everyone but themselves, but the fact of the matter is, they continue to log out the last of the old-growth, a natural bounty centuries in the making, and are now left with young second-growth tree farms and areas too costly to access.

Industry blames province for closure of Crofton mill, loss of 350 jobs
Domtar, which owns the mill, cited the lack of available fibre and poor pricing in global pulp markets for the shutdown.
What the closure of the Croton Mill proves is that the timber supply crisis is being driven by over-harvesting by industry, not megafires or pine beetle (from which Vancouver Island was largely spared) and not tariffs. We depleted the resource, plain and simple.

Leaked report claims B.C. timber harvest is vastly overestimated
An undisclosed report obtained by BIV estimates the province is likely approving twice as much logging than can be sustainably harvested
Wow, bombshell report by @stefanlabbe.bsky.social about how the BC Ministry of Forests may be overestimating the annual harvest rates by more than double, using unscientific methods and extremely optimistic assumptions to set rates. People should lose their jobs for this.

Logging old-growth just to be burned for energy seems like the lowest and worst possible use for these forests. They provide way more value to the ecosystem and communities standing and continuing to mitigate floods, droughts and landslides. Old forests are also more resilient to wildfire.
