If genocide isn't your redline, then you have no redlines.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge was closed temporarily as tens of thousands of Australians made their voices heard against Israel's genocide in Gaza. #FreePalestine #3E

The Texas Flood Was a Manmade Disaster
YouTube video by The Cutblock The Texas Flood Was a Manmade Disaster

My new video about the Texas flood is now live on my YouTube channel The Cutblock, where I break down the key factors that made this flood such an unmitigated disaster – natural landscape features, climate-fuelled storms and bad land-use decisions all played a role.

Agreed, it seems really *duhh* but the timber industry has used outdated science for decades to say the exact opposite – that clearcutting has minimal effect on larger floods. This turns the table 180 degrees on the prevailing wisdom. Hydrologists and RPFs rubber-stamping logging better take note.

Clear-cutting linked to 18-fold rise in extreme floods, UBC study finds - UBC News New research finds long-term impacts on flood size and frequency decades after trees are removed

A new study by UBC hydrologists, including my film subject Dr. Younes Alila, should be sending shockwaves through the BC Ministry of Forests and the timber industry. The study finds clearcut logging increases extreme floods by 18x and effects persist for up to 40 years.

What’s going on around Grand Forks, B.C.?

In 2018, devastating floods displaced more than 100 families β€” and the threat of more floods remains.

Trouble in the Headwaters is a short doc exploring the upstream impacts of industrial clearcut logging in the Kettle River watershed. Stay tuned πŸ“½οΈ

The film looks at the 2018 Grand Forks flood and unravels the latest science connecting the increased frequency and magnitude of flooding with widespread clearcut logging. The main subject of the film, Dr. Younes Alila, will be at the premiere and will be participating in a post-film discussion.

BC Timber Sales pauses logging in threatened caribou habitat The pause applies to new logging investments in the Revelstoke-Shuswap region, where the Columbia North caribou herd is losing habitat faster than it's replaced

Some rare good news that BC Timber Sales will be pausing logging in critical endangered mountain caribou habitat.

Don't get me wrong, failed BC government forestry policy is largely to blame for allowing these companies to log like there's no tomorrow with little oversight. But that's not what Tolko means. They want to the BC government to further subsidize their industry to log ever younger and shittier trees.

Tolko's Armstrong and White Valley operations will shut down for one week - Vernon News Tolko employees in the Armstrong Lumber and White Valley operations will be taking downtime of approximately one week due to a lack of economical fibre.

Tolko is pausing operations in Armstrong and White Valley. My thoughts are of course with the workers who are affected. But blaming "B.C. regulatory and policy burden" is a bit rich. They ran out of wood and they're blaming everyone but themselves.

A bill is currently working its way through Congress that would open up more industrial clearcutting by private timber companies in US public forests, under the guise of wildfire mitigation. Timber companies are pushing for the same failed strategies here in BC. It's disaster capitalism 101.
