13/13 Can we take the latest architect Phillippe Villeneuve at FACE value? In a 60 Minutes interview, he says he wanted to honor architects that came before him & reveals that he had his OWN FACE sculpted atop the spire. In reality, he just stuck his face on another man's work. Hmmm… I call BULL.💩

12/13 The hypocrisy of restoration w/o innovation can’t be ignored. Macron impressively met his restoration deadline, reopening Notre-Dame to international fanfare. But the restoration also stuck to a script, shying away from true innovation. Macron kept his promise, but @ what cost & what was lost?

11/13 French had no love for a greenhouse cathedral, but put glass pyramids @museeLouvre?!? Sure, France HATED it at first, but now it’s iconic! Hmmm…sound familiar? They also despised @EiffelTower, & thought it was an eyesore disrupting their skyline, but now it’s revered as their national icon.🙄

NAB Studio proposes turning Notre-Dame's roof into public greenhouse Paris-based NAB Studio has proposed building a giant greenhouse on top of Notre-Dame Cathedral to replace the roof lost in last months devastating fire.

10/13 One idea that really boiled some French blood, was the daring & drastic approach by NAB studio: A GREENHOUSE ROOF with a beehive spire! Ikr sounds crazy, but they wanted to reflect a Notre-Dame in the 20th century that represented biodiversity, sustainability, and education on climate change.

9/13 So what happened w/France’s redesign competition? Let’s take a look @ some modern spire designs before they were scrapped. Loved Alexandre Fantozzi of Spanish architect group POA Estudio proposal: a spire made of glass which would reflect the traditional religious symbolic celebration of light!

8/13 VIOLLET-LE-DUC endorsed buildings as living structures🌱 and allowed for change & modernization! So how can one argue for restoration to one singular “accurate” version of history? That thinking disregards & disguises the cathedral’s ongoing story which is enriched by adaptation.

7/13 OHH the Irony of it all! In 2019 the French wanted to bring back Viollet-le-Duc’s restored VERSION of the original spire out of the ashes,🔥but guess what?

‼️VIOLLET-LE-DUC WAS A MODERNIST‼️

And if he were alive today, he’d snub this backwards thinking in favor of change.

6/13 Guess how many times Notre-Dame has been restored? Five! After the French Revolution, it was barely standing—its bells melted for cannons, and the spire had to be removed due to disrepair. It wasn’t until the mid-19th century that the cathedral was restored by none other than Viollet-le-Duc.

5/13🚨NEWS FLASH🚨Notre-Dame was never the perfect example of French Gothic architecture. It was constructed over TWO WHOLE CENTURIES (1163~1345) before it was completed! Over time the architect's plans changed & modern inspirations like flying buttresses were added to the upper choir.

4/13 Notre-Dame’s evolution is stifled by fixed thinkers who avoid modern reimagining & fear loss of historical accuracy. Ironic, right? It’s exactly these new ideas, materials & symbolism that breathe life into old buildings, ensuring they retain cultural identity and relevancy across generations.

3/13 No surprise, the French did what they do best: protested. Saying modernization would destroy cultural & historical memory of the ORIGINAL spire designed by 19th century restorer Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. While I get this rationale, I can’t say I agree. Read more to find out why.

Macron Drops Idea of a Modern Spire for Notre-Dame (Published 2020) The French president had floated the idea of replacing the fire-ravaged cathedral’s 19th-century spire with a “contemporary architectural gesture.” Few were in favor.

2/13 French Prez Emmanuel Macron promised for “an even better Notre-Dame,” & hinted at a contemporary gesture for the fallen spire. Next day, game on, France’s Prime minister announced an international architectural competition for its redesign. Bet you can imagine how the French responded.

1/13 Notre-Dame burned, & so did France’s courage for innovation. In 2019 fires damaged the iconic French Cathedral, the question on everyone's mind was: would it be rebuilt as it last stood, or reimagined with a modern vision? Turns out the French don't like modernization.
