Very (un)serious person who, occasionally, makes friends along the way… (also an addiction researcher/psychologist)

Years of studying gambling in veterans has repeatedly demonstrated (to me at least, thatt, for a lot of folks dealing with gambling problems, those problems started on base while they were still serving

I know it's a white savior movie, but Last Samurai... raised super conservative, & watching that as a teenager was one of my first exposures to the idea that maybe colonialism was bad and that the American way of progress and war was harmful... legitimately started very important reflection for me

STEM obviously does not corrupt people; that’s absurd.
STEM taught me how to think scientifically, statistically, and probabilistically.
But in personal experience (n=1), the humanities made me a better thinker; certainly not a more moral one, but definitely a more careful and critical one.
As a former stem and humanity double major I think I’m something of a moral paragon myself

New research with Chris Floyd, Shane Kraus, and @joshuagrubbsphd.bsky.social ! We explored the relationship between concerns about compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) and other addictive behaviors. Even when people don't meet clinical criteria, CSB concerns may signal broader addiction risks.
Dr. Cottom is very much right in this; but also, this is an **extraordinarily** uphill battle in the U.S., where Christian hegemony still dominates. The current, dominant form of American christianity has virtually no tolerance for the notion of "chance"

Yeah, I address this in the replies; nih funding laid the foundations that pharma used; I don’t like the “he’s a hypocrite” framing, but that’s because I am a CF parent myself; I think he’s a heartless goon, but not because of the daughter with CF, but, arguably, nuance isn’t so important in this

Ironically, in CF groups I often have to advocate that the NIH does fund CF research
