I’m really only just getting into it but I genuinely love birding as a hobby. The entire goal is to look at the bird. Is there a bird? There is a bird! Look at the bird! If you are very keen you can learn what to call the bird so that you can properly thank it for the joy you feel when you see it. πŸͺΆ

When scholars of authoritarianism and fascism leave U.S. universities because of the deteriorating political situation here, we should really worry.

Stepping aside from the heart of the article -- you evoke the nuances of the Valley beautifully.

The early internet was so full of hope - a tool for building community rather than destroying it. That's part of of the residual sadness now.

The true history of Twitter I pulled into Amherst on a Friday night. From a payphone at the edge of the common, I called my friend, but he didn't pick up, and I realized I didn't know where he lived. The air was hot and muggy. M...

This essay contains truth that is inconvenient for some very powerful people, but it is nevertheless true. Please read it if you have a moment, I put my heart and soul in it.

I sincerely don’t know why people aren’t physically stopping those dorks. Move shit. Lock doors. Lose the keys. Everyone switch seats. Turn off all the lights. Switch the signs on the elevator lobby. Make the settings all silly. Use a different language. Wear costumes. Fill rooms with balloons

I read this differently. It is a brilliant act of subversion to β€˜paper over’ monuments in a way that highlights the ludicrousness of current directives without causing harm to the monuments.

It could be the start of a huge piece of protest art, laughing at tyrants.

It's nearly Candlemas. I know most of you neither know nor care about Candlemas (a feast celebrating the presentation of Christ) but you know what you do need? Something to celebrate in this bleak stretch between Christmas and actual daylight. So light a damn candle and have dinner with your friends

Sincerely delighted to discover, 45 minutes into this nearly-wordless three-hour documentary about French monks who take vows of silence, that among the reasons they *can* talk is "to make sure the monastery cats know when it's mealtime by making little kitty-calling noises at them."

This year, I am committing time to reading. Can you help me build my book list?

Looking specifically for something on Mediaeval Marginalia (and doodles), a poet full of wonder, and something about reclaiming the role of humanities/art/truth in the public square. Novels too.

The time I tried to keep the 12 days fully (with all the liturgies and a story telling tent with daily bedtime stories/ hot chocolate), I ended up sick for 6 weeks after. I don’t see how we can do it unless we refuse the chaos of December.

Happy 'brood of vipers' day to all prophets and provokers.

Isn't it bizarre that generations of people thought Christianity was about fitting in when John was right there all along, being his wild self?

I do. I was also (I think) the King’s first ecclesiastical appointment, which is what I prefer to remember.

Honestly it was a rollercoaster. Told on Monday, 2 Sept when it was still the Queen. By Wednesday all had changed. But the King kindly signed the request at Michaelmas.
