There are ways to appease both audiences, and they already do that to some extent with Red/Green nostalgia, but it could be expanded on in gameplay.
Different settings nested in menus where most kids wouldn't venture to, difficulty settings, or multiplayer like they had in Let's Go can all help.
I don't think these two things need to be mutually exclusive.
Family television, for example, is at its best when it entertains adults *and* children. My go-to example is the original Animaniacs. While it was aimed at kids, there were a lot of jokes that were meant for their parents.
