The Super Bowl is being played in Colin Kaepernick's former home stadium, at a societal moment that echoes the issues he forced football fans to confront nearly 10 years ago, after he kneeled during the national anthem before a 49ers game.

Becoming a U.S. citizen takes years and involves immigrants acquiring a green card, extensive interviews, background checks, classes and a citizenship test. The naturalization ceremony is the final step to the process, where the oath of allegiance and a citizenship certificate are granted. Immigrants approved to be naturalized went to Faneuil Hall Thursday - known as the country's cradle of liberty - for that long-awaited moment to pledge allegiance to the United States. But instead, as they lined up, some were told by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials that they couldn't proceed due to their countries of origin.

Newsom acting like Trump Lite = bad theatre, seen it before, lacks Trump's perverse charm, speaks to a closed loop
Portland frogs posting up on ICE goons = good theatre, never seen it before, highlights a ridiculous thing by juxtaposing another, kids love it, shareable among all kinds of adult
I got this idea from an X follower, not sure if he's on here. Also, I think I found out what I want to do in retirement: A book on the evolution of the West Coast Offense.
09.10.2025 03:22 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0There's nothing Shanahan can draw up that’s new & exciting. Indeed, he could decide he wants to come out in a wishbone formation this weekend, just to see what kind of chaos that might bring. And, frankly, I’d be all for it. I’d love to see the content creators and film folks reaction to it.
09.10.2025 03:22 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0In 2004, Mike Shanahan - now head coach of the Broncos - introduced 300 Jet Lion Drag slant. It's the same play that Kyle has today in his book & the same play that he called last week to get the 49ers some breathing room late in the game - which I can't post here because it's a video clip.
09.10.2025 03:21 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Sprint Right Option, the same way Walsh drew it up, was also in Gruden's book. Shanahan also has Sprint Right Option, but like Gruden, just calls it Q8.
09.10.2025 03:20 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0In his book, he introduced the 'lion' concept - the mirrored slant routes - on plays like 322 Scat Y Stick Lion. He also had 300 Jet Lion - mirrored slant routes on both sides of the formation,
09.10.2025 03:19 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0When Gruden became the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 1998, he introduced his version of the West Coast Offense to the Silver and Black.
09.10.2025 03:19 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Also included in the 1994 book was Mike's Far Double Wing Right X Right 62 (63) Z Drive, which is nearly identical to Kyle's 'arches' concept - called twice during the Week 5 win. The one below is what Bourne converted into a 35-yd gain.
09.10.2025 03:18 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0In 1994, then 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan introduced the 'dragon' terminology. Rather than a solo slant, the play evolved to two dragon concepts on either side of the formation. The elder Shanahan's book also had keeper plays, which look nearly the same as Kyle's designs today.

Mike Holmgren’s 1991 49er playbook kept Walsh’s idea, but Holmgren called it Red Right Y Motion Pass 331 Drag Slant. The dragon concept remained, it just sounded a bit different.
Former head coach Jon Gruden was an offensive quality control coach under Holmgren, so keep that in mind as we evolve.
For whatever it’s worth, Walsh also had a Statue of Liberty play in his 1985 book, but I’m unclear if he actually called it.
09.10.2025 03:17 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The play remained in the 1985 playbook. The ‘dragon’ combination is still there on the right. The '22/23' still exists in today's terminology. It indicates the backs are splitting.
09.10.2025 03:16 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Here's a similar look in Bill Walsh's 1982 playbook as 'Red Right Pass 331 'X' Slant'.
09.10.2025 03:16 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Vince Lombardi's 1966 Green Bay Packers offense ran a dragon combination, which he called Slant Pass or 36 Pass. You can see the 'dragon' concept - a slant route pairs with a drag route - on the left.
09.10.2025 03:15 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I was gonna get off my ass and write something up on the evolution of the Dragon Lion concept, but A) it's not turning out like I wanted, B) I feel it needs an actual historical look, not just something that skims the surface. But, here's what I found.

2 & 1 at the SF41 (8:10) Jones to Pearsall for 18yds. Super clever play: keeper action with a half roll; Yankee concept downfield - Valdes-Scantling on a far corner and Pearsall on a dover route. The far corner pulls the safety, opening up the field for Pearsall.
No dice again on the clip.
2Q: 1 & 10 at the SF32 (8:40) Jones to Valdes-Scantling for 9yds. I have this as Both Curl Y Over. Full clip won't post.
