New year, new venue, and a deep dive into one of the most fascinating domains of life. #JAMSSydney
Hint: I am one of the speaker details that are coming soon.
So save the date for some fun Archaea talk and behind-the-scenes insights from me, a recently submitted PhD.

wow... crawling motility in Asgard #archaea!! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
look at these crazy moves!! Let's face it, what these cells want for Christmas is #cilia... the best type of motility appendage...

To write well
you first have to write
badly.
Get some words down. However bad you think they are, you now have something to improve on. Review, rewrite and repeat. #acwri #PhDchat #PhDforum #ECRchat
List of available cultures
Ecoli cells (Dapi, on left) expressing bacterial (center) and archaeal 16S rRNA.
Clone-FISH paper out: Manuscript/resource alert #microsky π¦ We present a collection of 30 E. coli (CloneFISH) cultures, each carrying a plasmid for the heterologous expression of a (near) full-length 16S rRNA gene from one of 30 lineages of archaea, including 17 yet uncultured ones.

Here, we show that deep below, corals and feather stars donβt just share space β they share microbes. Endozoicomonadaceae + Nitrosopumilaceae inhabit both hosts in a βpromiscuousβ symbiosis that may fuel nitrogen cycling in the deep sea.

Following NASA's recent announcement of a potential biosignature on Mars, I want to replug my colleague @fletcher42.bsky.social's work on exogeoconservation!
As they state - "There is a need to balance the greatest scientific returns with limiting the impact of taking samples."

Back with another post about how I stay grounded whilst writing up my thesis!
This morning's sunrise was insane π
It was a high risk project and in the end I got 'scooped'. But my storytelling was engaging enough that even the camera picked up the π in me.

PhD exit seminar β
So happy I could share the bulk of my PhD where I optimised the expression, purification and (so far unsuccessful) polymerisation of novel eukaryotic-like proteins in Nelly (aka Loki-ASV2).
Listening to Stephanie Nobbs (@snobsi.bsky.social) telling us about the fascinating Asgard archaea isolated from Shark Bay's microbial mats. They isolated a new archaea and assembled its genome and in silico proteome. Found lots of eukaryote-like tubulins + new protein folds

New review out in Annual Review of Marine Science! ππ§«
We explore how ammonia-oxidising microbes form symbioses with marine hosts - fueling the nitrogen cycle, fixing carbon, and possibly feeding their hosts.

Thank you to the #archaea community for making my first #GRC a great one!
I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to present and meet lovely new people! β€οΈπ¦
Coming from an island country, it was also great to put faces (and personalities) to names I otherwise only see on papers. π©βπ¬π¬π©βπ»
#GRS and #GRC #Archaea in the Swiss Alps: great meetings and location! Many familiar and even more new faces. Going home with exciting ideas and collaboration initiatives on exploring #archaeal #viruses in #soil! Thanks to everyone π
