Just played the DLC for @lilgatorgame.bsky.social . The “villain” character is a cape-wearing pig called Darklord, who insists he’s not to be called “The Dark Lord“ — I guess because that title is already taken by Chuckles!

I’m just happy there were musicians and musical instruments involved. Last year’s halftime show had neither.

Top speed is 83 mph actually (software limited as that is the safety limit of the motors), though they always marketed it as 75 for some reason.

Never did get Dakar Desert Rally. Does it have hour-long stages like D18 has? I saw a video and was really underwhelmed by the navigator voice (people disliked the D18 guy’s shouting but he’s way more believable!). Been doing a whole D18 run again recently in hardcore nav mode.

My Steam review of Dakar 18 points out that, while the physics aren’t so good, the simulation of the experience in the harder modes makes it a must-have. There is a modder who has been improving its physics in the past couple of months, as well as creating a weather randomizer tool. Good stuff.

I think the first “simcade” game I can think of was NFS Porsche Unleashed. It was still NFS racing environments, i.e. complete fantasy, but with a decent physics engine that appealed to “sim racers” (cockpit views helped too). Loved it.

Talked for a while today with a man getting into sim racing. He’d just got a cockpit rig and all the gear so now was ready to add speakers and learn about how to get the software, as he was not computer savvy, but was quite keen to get some historic cars. He was 94 years old.

About 35 years ago when the Apple Newton came out, I was thinking there should be a term for devices like it in general (eventually the industry called them Personal Digital Assistant). My idea, before “PDA“ was adopted, was Personal Electronic Notebook & Information Store. Easy abbreviation to say.
