As a congestion pricing partisan, the degree to which it turns out to be One Weird Trick for a whole host of adjacent issues (business visits, noise complaints, traffic outside the zone) is delightfully surprising even to me.

hey remember when a bunch of middle-aged drunk korean lawmakers climbed the locked gates to the national assembly to hold an emergency session after the president gave illegal orders to the military, all of which ended with said president being sentenced to prison

Let's hope Irish broadcasting can finally clear out this Yates infection once and for all.

She is also the best storyteller I’ve ever met in my life. It was she who told me tales of my great aunt Maggie, who lived to be 106 and, until her dying day, cohabited with her two bachelor sons, for whom she was still cooking breakfast – and delivering semi-regular scoldings related to their drinking habits – well into their 80s.

Text from the Fermanagh Herald, October 1989:

Margaret Dundas celebrated her 106th birthday on Saturday - and revealed her secret for long life. No drinking, no smoking - and stay away from men.

Margaret (pictured with her sons), still alert, giggled loudly as she told her family and friends of her magic recipe for longevity.

Family and friends gathered at her home on Derrygonnelly for a birthday celebration on Saturday and among the many birthday greetings was Margaret's seventh telegram from the Queen. "She forgot to put in a few quid," Margaret joked, "isn't it a pity to be poor."

She has lived in her present house since her son Patrick was born in 1913, and how shares it with him and her oldest son Joey, who is 83.

Old Mrs Dundas - your great grand aunt - died at 106. She had two sons, Sonny and somebody else and they never got married and they lived with her. She got up ever morning and she made them dunner and kept house and the two boys were fond of going down to the pub in Derrygonnelly and she had a terrible job minding them. But anyway, one of them had a prostrate thing and was in the hospital. He was 81 and this aul bitch of a nurse - hated Catholics with a vengeance - was saying to me, since I was a social worker - "you'd need to speak with someone, had a drink last night, came in from Lisnaskea", almost as if since I was a Catholic, I'd be able. So she rang Sheila and Joe [my parents] asking them to bring in his clothes, and they went in and chatted with him and he seemed grand. But when they go to pick him up, the nurse says he's raving. Sheila says "he seems fine to me" and the woman scoffed - "we asked him who he was going home to and he said his mother" and Sheila said, "well actually he is" Now Sheila wouldn't think that was funny, she just said "yes he is going to his mother, it's quite true", and the mother died at age 106. There was a photograph of her in the paper. At 106!

I mention my great aunt Maggie, who has been covered in the press before - when she took the occasion of her 106th birthday to call out the Queen. As always, my auntie Patricia told her stories best, as in the tale of her son's trip to hospital when he was in his eighties.

Actually I think you’ll find that they spoiled their vote because we’ve lost the ancient art of telling people to cop on for themselves when they’re talking shite

A grim reminder: these people will never be satisfied. There’s no point at which they will say “we’ve won, let’s enjoy life.” They will always be looking for someone else to punish, to revile, to dehumanize. They’re empty without that.

Mr. SCHERER: Why do you not stay in Russia?

PAUL ROBESON: Because my father was a slave, and my people died to build this country, and I am going to stay here, and have a part of it just like you. And no Fascist-minded people will drive me from it. Is that clear?
