It would be great if America’s pundits would pause this entire genre. “Burning down my house means I don’t need to take out the trash!” Your cleverness is not winning the day right now.

Don’t sit this one out. The Regulatory Standards Bill is a direct threat to all of us.
It’s a gift to corporates. It favours privatisation & cuts to public services.
If there’s one thing you do this weekend, make a submission and get a mate to do one too.
Closes 1pm, Mon 23 June 2025.

There is already a nuclear-armed country in the Middle East that does not allow international inspectors despite having nukes for decades - and it’s not Iran.
Israel is also one of a handful of countries to have never signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

14.06.2025 01:52 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0A similar logic applies to taxing businesses on how much profit they make, not how they make it, when addressing environmental issues/externalities. There's $9k of activity behind the $1k of profit which delivers $200 of tax. $200 won't fix $9k of pollution; you need to tax the pollution directly.

You can never recoup lost tax revenue through economic growth. Why? Math.
Assume an economy with $100 in taxable income with a 20% tax rate. The government gets $20 in taxes.
Now assume a 10% tax cut. The government gets 18%. What will the government need to earn to get back to $20?

Santana will try and push through their fast tracked gold mine within a matter of weeks. So it’s important that as many people as possible are informed, understand some of the horrendous issues, and know what they can do about it.

10.06.2025 03:33 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Excerpt from Stuff 29 April 2025... A main focus of Tuesday’s speech was debt. “The interest bill on Government debt has soared from $3.6b in 2014 to $8.9b last year. That’s an awful lot of money,” Willis told the crowd at Metco’s factory. She noted the annual interest payments New Zealand was making, issuing about $500 million of Treasury bonds each week, amounted to more than was spent on law and order and defence combined.
This misleading crap just gets spilled out into the media with barely any challenge. The purpose of course is to convince us that cuts to public services and the sale of assets to rentiers are all very necessary indeed. TINA. Let's unpick these manipulative stats... [Geek Level Medium to High 🧵1/n]

It'd be great if any political reporter could ask the government why it is so important for "Hard working Kiwis" that the country get into surplus.
What would that look like for your average family. What programs would get funded that can't be while there's a deficit.
Here’s the basis for why all hell would have broken loose on the ninth floor of the Beehive on Tuesday.

They know things can be rejected at the level of customs & norms—that’s why they lean SO hard on advertising to get buy in & fake narratives of inevitability early on.
