Again, I thought this was the HEIGHT of choreography at the time. I'm not ashamed to admit that I would break out my støveldance any chance I got at family parties at an age (13) where I should have been embarrassed by such things.

A bowl of rice porridge. A thick layer of cinnamon and sugar and a dab of butter have been distributed on top.

And RICE PORRIDGE. Oh, it's a classic. Thicker than the rice pudding you might know in the UK. Served with cinnamon, sugar and a glob of butter.

VERY autistic-friendly treat. Warning: Most online recipes make it too runny. Add at least 30% more rice.

But you then make a filling (I prefer a simple butter, sugar and cinnamon, though it's not the "original filling") and fold or roll it up. It's honestly sublime.

I like to unfold them or nibble the edges off & squeeze the filling out.

Gjertrud mentions two sweet treats here. Lefser, which was translated as pancakes, and honningkake, translated as ginger bread.

Honningkake does contain ginger, but their actual translated name is Honey Cake. I don't think I've ever had them!

But calling lefse pancakes is wild -

The radio broadcasts go by real fast, but they're worth it! The costs of running an olympic event are an ever-green fount of jokes it would seem.

In order to develop a credit rating, I started buying on credit. Literally only for that reason. Now, if something just slightly inconveniently spiny, I immediately Klarna it.

Olaf's insistence that they don't buy anything on credit is supposed to obviously allude to his cash-only potato business, but it was also a stance that I think most people my age were taught.

But that meant I literally had no credit score when I started looking to get a mortgage! Oops!

Episode 3:
Have you noticed yet that the two at the potato farm are the same actors as Gynther and Hansi? But what about Fritz?! Does he not have a double?

They wake up in the evening, find the key, sing a song, remember that the propeller is bent, and promptly go back to sleep. OH WHAT A LIFE!

Bear in mind, the oldest and most important nissemann in the world is currently fucking DYING in his bed, waiting for that key.

Episode 2 now. When this show first came on our screens, I definitely didn't notice just how slap-dash all the musical numbers are. I doubt they've been choreographed or blocked much at all. Most of the time it feels like they just turned the cameras on and went "all right, do what feels right!"

I love that they spend so much time just showing snippets of Gjertrud and Olaf just hanging out. It has ZERO plot significance. Nor do the radio announcements. They're just little jokey-jokes and character bits and I love them.

I cannot fully explain just how embedded their little sayings became in Norwegian culture in the nineties.

The home of the potato farmer and his wife is incredibly accurate to rural Norway, at least how I remember it from the nineties.

Good Old Gammel-Nok (Good Old Old-Enough) is a legendary actor in Norway, he played the lead in an old series of films called Olsenbanden, which was basically Ocean's Eleven, except three Norwegians.

So I'm watching the Norwegian version, because I'm a Norweginavian.

Their little catch phrases are so good, and are definitely not given their full due by the translation.

At his best, you get Vigilante, who is a murderous psychopath who actively enjoys killing but is also anti-racist and an absolute delight in every scene (owing as much to Freddie Stroma).
