Last week, the Ont govt announced that psychologists will be getting prescription rights.

This next week, our psych college announced that in response to govt pressure, the new standard to be a
psychologist will be 1/3 of the training we currently require.

This needs to be public.

I feel the exact same way. We have all been too complicit in the regulation of our profession

100%. To hear a council member, who was not a psychologist, completely misrepresent what we do was extremely concerning. How is it that people who do not understand our profession are allowed to vote on regulating it?

This will not increase access to mental health care. There is an important place for masters level clinicians as registered psychotherapists. There are great therapists who are registered with that college. Changing our standards to match theirs makes no sense.

26.09.2025 03:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 6    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Like MDs, we require a 6 years and 6000+ clinical hrs to be a psychologist. This would lower it to 2 yrs and 300 hrs

Psychologists do assessments on offenders in jail, on children for learning problems, on suicidal patients. Would you feel safe with people having 1/3 of the training doing these?

26.09.2025 03:02 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 4    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The proposal is to remove our ethics and oral licensing exams, remove the requirement of CPA approved PhD program requirements and allow masters registration, and getting rid of areas of competency, among other things.

This is incredibly dangerous to the public.

This is a very good point. Thanks for that perspective.

I do think we can pay attention to what state conferences are held in though.

Maybe we will have to do hybrid yet again.

I have spoken to many colleagues. And some agree. Others are of the opinion that we should just go where we want for conferences. Some didnt even think about it as a potential issue. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I understand that there are financial implications to moving a conference. And that some people are not thinking about the implications of conference locations because of their privilege. But I hope we can all take a step back and acknowledge what it means if we choose to ignore the situation.

Will I miss out on opportunities? Yes, sure. However, why is it ok for me to have those opportunities when my students cannot? That is the very definition of privilege. Instead, I choose to use my voice to advocate for conferences to move to places where these students are safe.

19.09.2025 20:32 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This is not about one specific conference, but a number of them that continue to plan events in states and countries that are not safe for people from some communities (namely 2SLGBTIA+ and BIPOC, and women of reproductive age).

19.09.2025 20:32 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Unpopular take: In my lab, I have students from different backgrounds. We have built a community around safety and mutual respect. If any of my students are not safe entering a country or state, I will not attend a conference there. Full stop. I encourage you all to think about doing the same.

Ontarioโ€™s Post-Secondary Education Crisis in Five Figures | The Local Stagnant provincial funding, a domestic tuition freeze, cuts to international students, and expensive capital projectsโ€”the numbers behind the emergency in higher education.

This is an excellent analysis of what has been happening to post-secondary education in Ontario. It succinctly describes how the tuition cut and freeze by Ford directly lead to the explosion of international students, and how under funded ON universities are.

There has been recent clear communication (as of yesterday) that this is exactly what they are doing. Not sure why there are mixed messages? Sadly it does seem to be the case.

I've looked through the reddit for fun and I would say its 50/50 but you need to know what is good advice.

And you will inevitably get the person who says "I have a 4.0 GPA, published 29 articles and started a charity, do I have a chance" .... which is so unhelpful.

Interesting. I honestly haven't had the time to fully dive into the bluesky features (yay TT job!) But maybe I need to get better about that.

One advantage the other app had was that it pushed out content to the right people (for the most part)

Oh man, Reddit can be full of reallt bad advice! But I get the pull. I find Reddit best with a big bucket of popcorn ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ˜‹

This is helpful. Clearly my second post was better timed. Is there a time of day that works best?

So this is a great example. This post barely made to a couple of accounts.
What am I doing wrong on here? Can someone help explain the Bluesky algorithm to me so I know how to get advice out to the right people?
It sucks when you want to help students, but your voice gets lost.

I used to post advice for students about applying to grad school on the bird app. Those posts were popular, and I heard from students that they were helpful in preparing applications. But I dont get nearly the same views on this app or instagram. Where are students going now for this type of advice?
